Two Hawks suggested in a Review Forum thread that a separate general forum be established for discussions related to tomahawks & camp axes. I think it would be a great idea and, rather than leave the suggestion buried in a product review, I thought it would be worthwhile to bring it here where it will get more exposure.

There seems to be a lot of interest in the topic & quite a bit of good information has been recently posted in various forums - Reviews, Wilderness & Survival, Practical Tactical, Custom, HI, ATC, etc. However, the lack of a devoted place to discuss these tools may be limiting discussion somewhat as well as making information more difficult to find. For example, Patte Gauche recently posted some great information on using epoxy to repair handles & to make laminated handles in the ATC forum. The search term "handle repair" did turn up the thread, along with 104 others, the vast majority of which had nothing to do with tomahawks. Likewise, callahwj compiled a list of tomahawk related resources in Practical Tactical. It is included among 162 results for the search term "tomahawk".

IMO, while the ATC Forum is a great resource, it is a manufacturer forum and should be dedicated to discussions of their products. Although some general tomahawk questions have arisen & been answered there, their forum certainly wouldn't be an appropriate venue to discuss other makers' products.

So what do you think -- should there be a separate general forum for discussions related to tomahawks & camp axes? TIA.

ABSOLUTELY !!

We need a new forum full of edgy things that cost a lot of money.
(I'm not being sarcastic)
As you said, the "hawk" threads are spread out all over the forum.
I'm all for it.

I noticed a thread on the ATC forum about hawks and such, and this idea came up. I sent the link to Spark to check out. Brian's brilliant poll idea :) will give Spark some great info to help him make any decision. Good Job Brian!

P.S., if a forum is created, I'll trade a Crappy Frost Cutlery Surgical Stainless steel for a hawk. Sadly, I have ho hawk :(

Hey WTF,
Very nice picture of Ryan's "Patriot Hawk".

I just wish it were a little bit bigger.;)

NICE hawk!
I would be the first to admit prejudice (having been a specialist hawk maker for about 10 years). However, the point has been well made that the axe discussions are at present so badly scattered through multiple other forums that it it difficult for folks to get the information they need. This essential bush/camp/trail/CQB tool needs a home on BLADE Forums.

Thanks for all the support for the idea, folks. Let's keep those "yes" votes coming! :D

Andy, I guess it really is true that we have to be careful what we ask for. ;) I suggest we table the topic of moderator(s) until we see if the concept is a go.

I talked with Spark briefly yesterday on Chat and asked him if he got my e-mail. He gets 400 a day, so he is aware of our plight, but not of the details. If someone lives near Spark, I suggest sending a pizza to his house, along with a printout of this thread :)

To ensure a cool race, Louis could be moderator too. He is a long range hawk chucker and knows his stuff. I'm sure we could dream up a great gauntlet for Brian, Louis and any other candidates to run through to become moderator!

I agree with everything said thus far. Axe and 'hawk questions are "all over" the forums. It would be great to get them localized. There is no doubt a large # of axe/hawk users and campers on BFC. The axe has been one of the greatest inventions of mankind and deserves it's own forum.

Cray,

I am flattered that you suggested me as a moderator and I will give it great consideration. If Brian decides to moderate, you can probably count me in too.:)

"TheMartialWay" the 50 foot hawk chucker as moderator.....
Definitely !!
I saw his movie.
I second that nomination as well.
Brian & Louis could be a good team.
(and as far as I know, neither one is expecting
Grand Jury indictments)
Let the other moderators take heed!!
:D

Moderators, eh? Well, I don't know. Maybe if Louis & I were to co-moderate & coordinate our ignore lists, we wouldn't have to give them up completely. :D

:
A seperate forum would not only centralize information but would also keep the discussion of competitors products to a place where they could be compared fairly.

Another good idea Brian, thanks.

I've been searching for info on purchasing my first 'hawk, a forum where I could query experienced users would be very helpful.

The two keys to us opening a forum here are

1. Is there a need for us to do so, and
2. Will there be enough sustained traffic to justify it.

I don't like opening forums on a trial basis, so I tend to be more conservative when I open them.

Kevin, I don't know what it will take to convince you but I'll sure try. ;) Regarding need, as several folks have noted, tomahawk & axe threads are all over the place. I just did searches using the keywords "axe, hatchet, hawk & tomahawk" and found 1456 threads spread over 27 forums. If only 1/3 of these had been posted in a single general hawk/axe forum, that would be more volume than 20 existing forums (not counting the Exchange area) presently have. My gut tells me that the overall number of threads would have been higher if there were a readily identifyable forum for general axe/hawk questions/discussions.

As to sustained traffic, I don't know of a way to accurately predict that. (If it were easy to predict Web traffic on any given topic, there wouldn't be so many failing dot.coms. :)) Nevertheless, at the time I'm writing this, 43 people have voted "yes" that they would like to see such a forum and this thread has been viewed 422 times in the 2+ days that it has been here. Now, the poll feature is new & there is not much to compare this with; however, it seems like a fair amount of traffic to me.

Is there a particular level of interest that you would like to see expressed before giving it the green light? If so, let's keep the poll near the top & going for a few more days to see what overall support we get. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do or say to help make this happen. TIA.
