Brian,
All good points you make. I agree with them all.

Spark,
Please allow yourself as much time as you need to make an informed judgement on this subject.
I truly do feel as if this forum will be a good addition that will fill a gap here at BFC as well as compliment several other current forums. This forum will supply forumites with a place with which they can post their specific tomahawk/axe questions and comments as well as provide makers an oppurtunity to answer these questions/comments. It will also provide a central database of information on this tool (or toy....whichever you please) to which could easily be referenced by all.
No pressure here from me Spark. I only wish to throw in my .02!:)

Oh, BTW, as we told Kevin via e-mail, Louis & I have communicated offline and agreed to co-moderate the forum if it comes to pass.

And I agree to be the official Hawk Talk forum pest, since I know nothing about them!

Sounds like a good idea.
Hawks seem to be getting very popular
since "The Patriot".
Why not give it a shot ?

Re: traffic on site ... already on Page 2 of posts after 3 days which is a lot of interest from registered members. "Lurker" traffic seems to be high as well, judging from the total number of visits.
Brian-
Thanks for being willing to take on "referee" duties. We definitely need someone credible and experienced but without a vested interest in any particular maker's products.
Louis-
If you can hit anything with a hawk at 50 feet you are a LOT better man than I ever was .... and I make the d*mn things. Co-moderator??? YES!!!!!!!

Add my vote! I think there is wide interest and plenty to consider when discussing hawks (from modern high tech materials to authentic period pieces) and camp axes.

A forum would allow more depth to discuss product quality, safety, proper use and handling, throwing hawks, combat, etc.

BTW, I've been out of the country and away from the forums for some time. What improvements have been made -- feel a bit like a stranger in my own home. Congrats to Spark and all who helped create the NEW Bladeforums! Great Job!!

I think it's a good idea. There are forums for balisong and auto enthusiasts (amongst others) and this would facilitate finding information about an area of rapidly growing interest.

Though I don't yet own a 'hawk (my bro' Brian is trying to change that, however) it'd be nice to have an area where the information would be consolidated making it more accessible.

The idea has my support.

Heck, Blues, I don't know how you've held out so long. You know that Ryan Johnson does make some neat neck hawk models, don't you? ;)

Kevin, I don't want to seem like I'm pressuring you for a decision. Please all the time you need to come around & say "yes". :D Seriously, before I unplug & go play with my hawks for the weekend, I want to share the results of some searches I did this morning & give you something else to consider in terms of both need & sustained traffic. In short, the proposed forum would have no competition on the Net.

A Metasearch of the Web turned up some new resources, mainly dealers & a few makers, that can be added to the resource list that William Callahan (callahwj) started in Practical Tactical. However, there were no discussion groups found.

I also did a newsgroup search & found over 1,000 threads in response to the search term "tomahawk throwing", most in rec.knives but others in places like rec.martial-arts, rec.juggling, etc. ("Tomahawk" alone was too generic a search term. Although it found over 48K threads, those pertaining to tomahawk missiles & the airplane model were mixed in.) My quick scan of the "tomahawk throwing" threads revealed that even some basic questions, like "can anyone recommend a good throwing hawk?", went unanswered.

Given all the dealers, makers and questions that I found, I think its fair to say that there is a good amount of interest in hawks & axes. What is lacking, however, is a centralized place for Q&A & discussion. BladeForums prides itself on being the "leading edge of knife discussion." It could also be the leading edge of hawk/axe discussion as well. ;) Thanks again for considering our proposal.

It bothers me to see close to 500 "hits" on the thread, but only about 55 votes.

I've got a good plainjane factory hawk my bro sent while I was waiting my custom to be created.

And one that is more than custom. It was chosen for me by my bro from a number of semi-formed blanks as having the right spirit for me and then hand made and finished for me specifically.

It is a pure fighter spike hawk that I regard as an honor to have. Every time I pick it up I'm reminded that I've been entrusted with it because others expect I will diligently control it's aggressive spirit.

I can't say I'm "into" hawks that much, but I would love to have a forum that gave the hawk it's due and provided a place to accumulate knowlege and lore to be treasured and passed on to future generations the way the HI forum has done for khukuris.

It's the right thing to do if it can be done in a good way.

A general ax/tomahawk forum would be awesome. Let's hope it gets going.

I hope the general ax/tomahawk forum works so I can learn more about hawk and throwing.
Thanks.

I have owned a cast stainless tomahawk for a few years and have wanted to get more information on 'hawks since seeing a group of Rev War rifleman reenactors giving a throwing demonstration in Washington's Crossing PA.

I wonder if we should include hand saws in this forum.
(Bow saws, string saws etc.)
I know they're a little boring, but they are quite efficient.
(No chain saws unless they have maple burl handles and Talonite chains) ;)
What do you think ??
Doc

Well, Doc, I guess I could do a maple burl inlay but I don't know about the Talonite chain.

Seems like there are a number of places already where pack saws, bow saws etc. fit well:
COMMUNITY: Gadgets and Gear
EXCHANGE: Misc. for Sale/Everything but Knives,
Trade/Gadgets and gear, For Sale/Gadgets and Gear
Saws are different enough from axes and hawks that lumping them in would probably reduce user access to that type of cutting gear rather than increasing it. Most folks looking for a saw are not going to look under "Axes and tomahawks."

I thought I'd add some eye candy to get this back to page 1. ;) Here's my Ryan Johnson Plains War Hatchet & Livesay Sandbar Bowie.
