Deep carry smallish EDC?

In a knife that small, a lock really isn't necessary IMO. I think the Spyderco Squeak is an excellent choice, and it will soon be available in more colors as well. The Carbon Fibre or Titanium UKPKs are dressier, but still small enough to not need a lock. The slipit design is actualy really good for light to medium duty, very safe and easy to open/close. In many cases, if you need a lock, you might be better of with an Izula or something, unless a small fixed blade has legality issues.
 
im not sure if the medium size they are referring to is actually the small.

the model number for the buck vantage paperstone small is 0340BLS, you can try google searching that and use google's shopping feature.
 
Thanks for the help everyone. I ordered a Buck Paperstone Vantage and should have it by Thursday. I also contacted both USA knifemaker and knifekits about the spacing on their deep carry clips to see if any of them will fit my Skyline. I'll report back when I find out or receive word on the clips or get the knife.
 
Received the Paperstone vantage today. Overall I like the size, shape and clip.
The blade was centered nicely, but the pivot is not smooth at all. There is too much friction to open the knife with the flipper and difficult with my thumb. I tried loosening the screw but that barely helped and made the blade hit the liner.

Any tips on fixing this?

you probably have to lubricate the pivot point.
 
I took it apart and put some 3in1 oil on the joint but it didn't really help. It feels like there is friction from the liner lock.
 
+1 Kershaw Cryo.
Or CRKT Heiho (hissatsu 2). These are my go-tos when I have to look conservative for work-related meetings.
 
I will probably end up returning the vantage. It's a nice little knife, but because there is so much friction opening is a pain. I want something small and easy/quick to open.

I'm still looking at the Kershaw Cryo and will likely pick one up.
I'm looking back at some of the Spyderco recommendations from earlier and I kinda like both the squeak and meerkat. If I were to choose one of those which would be better and why? I haven't been able to find side by side pics.
Also, where could I order that has reasonable prices and shipping and will actually ship to New York state? So many places won't ship to me even though I live in rural western NY.
 
One thing to consider about the Cryo is that it is very dense. It weighs 4.2oz, which is a lot to put on that tiny deep carry pocket clip. It rides fine in jeans and heavier dress pants (the ones that are built more like khakis.) If you wear dress pants that have thinner cloth, it might flop around a lot and generally feel like a small brick swinging from your pocket.

The only other slight issue with the Cryo is that it has the strongest lockbar I've ever encountered on a framelock. It required a touch of Rem-oil on the lock faces(which leaves a film of microscopic Teflon flakes behind.) Before the Rem-oil, it was a little difficult to unlock, but now it's fine, and the oil in the pivot makes it open slicker and faster than any of my other assisted openers.

You should definitely get one. It is an amazingly designed little knife. It is built tougher than anything in it's price range other than Cold Steel Tri-Ad designs. Also, it feels much nicer in hand than any of the $30-ish Cold Steel knives. The Cryo really feels like what it is: a mini Hinderer.

So, get the Cryo. If you have heavier dress pants you'll love it. And, if you like the knife as much as I do, you might end up buying heavier duty pants specifically to support it. :D

sorry to hear that the vantage isn't working out. did you ever post a thread in buck's section of this forum?

you could always contact/email the seller and explain that you live outside of NYC.
 
The buck is getting better so I might keep it... It was recommended that I polish the brass washers. I asked what the recommended method for this and what lubrication I should use but haven't gotten an answer. I'm willing to give it a try.

Is National Knives any good? They seem to get decent reviews here and they have good prices for both the Meerkat and Cryo.

good to hear that your vantage is getting better.

i have my vantage pro in my hand right now. i just loosened the pivot so that the blade went off center and then tightened it until the blade just got to perfect centering. my knife opens pretty smoothly. i hope that helps.

Well, I only own a Squeak, and it is a very good knife. It is about $30 less than the Sprint Run meerkat, weighs one ounce less, has tip up carry (which I prefer), and since it is non-locking, is safe from the NYC knife grab that is going on (if you ever need to go to NYC). The Squeak should be available in more colors soon as well (I believe they are adding orange, blue, and yellow to the linup later this year).

I do hear that the Meerkat's lock makes a fun gimmick, and that you can make money betting people they won't be able to figure out how to close it...

Rem-Oil is one of the best inexpensive lubricants I've used because of the Teflon it contains.

If you're at all worried about using a synthetic oil and Teflon product near food, then you can use mineral oil. You'll need to oil it slightly more often with mineral oil, but it works well enough.
 
I'll have to pick up some Rem-Oil. Hopefully my local outdoor shop has some. I decided to return the Buck Vantage... I decided it wasn't worth the effort to polish the washers. I submitted a return with Amazon and ordered a Spyderco Meerkat from National Knives. The total was a bit more than my original budget, but I polled a couple other family members to see which they liked better between the Squeak and Meerkat and 100% liked the Meerkat.

If the Squeak does indeed come out in other color variations I'll probably pick one up too! The added expense means I'll probably have to wait a couple months before getting a Cryo, but by then I hope they will be easier to find.
 
Received my Meerkat today. Very nice little knife! The blade is small, but the handles ergos are perfect making it not feel so small in my hand. The overall size is larger than I anticipated, but that's okay with me.
The clip is nice and you can barely see anything of the knife when clipped in my pocket.

This is my second Spyderco... Well 3rd. I purchased a Tenacious and liked it so much I tried a Byrd Meadowlark 2 FRN, which I didn't like and returned. I was unsure about the frn handle on the meerkat, but this feels quality where the Byrd did not. I think I'd be willing to try another Byrd in g10 but not in frn.
