deer Abby (animal pest advice)

OK, there has been plenty of science on this. Try
http://www.walnutcouncil.org/deer_repellent_study.htm
for a list of products that have been compared. Many worked well.
Coyote urine is useless.

Get Durapel if you don;t want to read the study.

If you want to go organic though, try this recipe.

An effective deer repellent spray was reported by Dr. Larry Severeid, host of the national meeting of the Walnut Council in LaCrosse, Wis. this summer. The concoction has both an offensive taste and smell and appears to stay in place for an extended period.

During the growing season it needs to be applied to the unsprayed new growth, and after extensive rainfallit should be reapplied. It is effective for controlling spring, summer and fall deer browsing damage.

The recipe calls for: 2 dozen large eggs, beaten in a blender, and mixed with 2 or 3 parts water. Add 2 to 3 ounces (1/3 cup) of Hinder (repellent) and 4-5 ounces (1/2 to 2/3 cup) of Durapel or Deer Guard (Bitrex). Severeid also adds some laundry soap or commercial surfactant.

He applies the solution with a back-pack sprayer that is used only for non-herbicide purposes. It is better to apply in the morning, when temperatures are lower, than in the evening.

For winter bud damage protection, Severeid uses only Bitrex applied to the terminal buds with a paint brush - as this is the only part of the tree that needs protection at that time. As soon as the buds break in the spring, the first solution should be used, since food is scarce at this time and the most damage occurs.

If you try this method, Severeid would appreciate hearing of your experiences by e-mailing him at: bwtree@aol.com

Here is a foolproof method: For $10.00 I will send you a pix of my MIL. Put pix on post & place near plants. Now, this is the important part - you must place the pix close enough for the deer to see, but far enough away that the plants don't die! You should wear a welders mask when handling the pix. :D

ROFLMAO!

I was walking along one of our local nature trails and came across a fawn. I yelled and waved and it just stood there looking at me. I took out my harmonica and played a few notes and it ran away.

Would you like me to send you a recording? :)

Commercial deer repellants might work. They also repel rabbits. They all work by making the plants unpalatable to the animals by having a repulsive odor and taste. You can even mix some up yourself - use lots of rotten eggs, garlic, soap, and hot peppers - the mo' hotta, the mo' betta!

And so you were walking along a local nature trail and chanced upon nature whereupon you took to yelling and waving to chase it away...sounds... reasonable :D

Edited to add :D

The trail is in sight and sound of a local highway. (The deer tend to cross the highway, regardless of traffic.) The fawn was standing there with no other deer around -- I know, they were in the woods. The trail isn't my own private reserve. A lot of people run their dogs through there.

You read a lot -- wrong -- into a brief remark.

Me, too :D

I thought it was funny tha the little guy had no clue that humans are slaughtering all the animals and destroying the planet, and he wasn't even afraid of us!

They are like weeds around here. It's really funny that a lot of locals tell me they never see them, but they are all around us. After a rain, I see their hoofprints all over the trails.

You are lucky. We have no deer where I live, or any wildlife to speak of, not even squirrels, so I find these threads about problems people have living where there's wild life real interesting

During the summer, we usually get a bear down from the hills a few miles away. Skunks, raccoons, hawks ... all common, I see the little guys running across the street at night. This is a pretty densely populated suburban community, too, with a lot of traffic.

But I used to live in New York City, near Central Park. I saw raccoons there often enough. More squirrels than people.

We have a famous hawks nest on Fifth Avenue, just across the avenue from Central Park. Especially in nice weather, dozens of people are out there watching the hawks. They raise a brood every season.

Hey Guys...

There are Alot of things that will work..
Deer simple destest the smell of humans..Human oduor spells danget to deer..

Wear a Tee-shirt for several days, and hang it up around where the deer eat... Swap it out every couple of days with a fresh dirty tee..If theres two people in the house get htem to do it as well..

This will only work for the short term though...

We have used this method to get deer use to our own odours at our tree stands as well,, so they will get use to our smell...

You can also buy Coyote urine and scents at certain outdoors store,, that will also work.

Or if you want to go even quieter than a BB/pellet gun, but not as big as a crossbow, get yourself a good slingslot. It's not too hard to find ball bearings, and you could have yourself some fun. Just don't get caught.

James

Use paint balls in the slingshot. I know Baboons freak at the colour change. They are natural racists and tend to discriminate against the pink!. Bright Pink! Light sting and Bling.
