Deer and Cats

Midnight, the wild cat that lives under the porch, is a constant source of amazement for the local deer. They are always following him when he is in the yard, stamping their feet and bobbing their heads like they do with any strange object. He has been here for about two years now so you would think they would be used to him, but -

Here he is, just minding his own business a couple of days ago.

Then they get too close - even the new guy is becoming a pest! It's not like he is some kind of sissy. He runs with the foxes at night!

And he heads for the porch.

I started feeding them 35 years ago when I planted 500 pine trees, and had to keep the deer from eating them. I just kept on out of habit. I feed dog food to the foxes too, so they will stay out of the back yard. It's not just the deer - the ducks, squirrels, birds etc. also eat the corn. Not that much really, it's a small herd that we (the neighborhood) support as we get surrounded by housing projects.
