Well I set back off to the spot where I had all the trouble trying to light a fire before, this time I was going to show that I had learnt through my mistakes !!!

On the way there I spotted this deer and pulled over to snap a pic....

The rain started to come down again and when I had just about reached the spot I started to look for Fatwood, this looked promising !!!

Forgetting to pack my axe and chainsaw it was down to the knife to do the task......

So then it was off to the jinxed spot and ready to start a fire using my secret weapon....some hand sanitizer ( tried it at home and it worked a treat !)

As the rain continued to come down the fire once again failed to light !!!
There was a strong wind coming off the water and even though this time I attempted to set up a wind-break it was still no good.....Damn is this spot jinxed or what ?????
Using plan B, my Mini Bic I did get a fire going !!!!

What horrid weather !!!

With the fire going it was time to break out the Tea and some of Mrs Pit's homemade Almond and Apricot cookies.....bliss !

Maisy had to have some of her treats....

I'd also bought along my folder for a change and it was great for making fatwood fuzz sticks....

Con't.....

Cont'd...

I then put out the fire and started heading back. Maisy decided to carry some wood incase we needed another fire. She carried this all the way back to the parking lot, no wonder her necks 20" !!!

I came across this tree which would require very little work to make into a decent shelter....

I took my main PSK along but this is my new mini set up, I'm still working on the contents but found it better than an Altoids tin as it's slightly larger....

The waterfall was in full force today.....

I attempted to get ya a pic from the top of the falls but I'm no Bear Grylls so this was as close as I could get !

Great stuff Pit, Thats a big chunk of wood Maisy got there!

Beautiful Waterfall!

Great pics, Pitdog. Especially the waterfalls.

I love your new PSK case. Excellent idea - both because it's transparent and because it has compartments. I'll have to look into something like that.

All the best,

- Mike

So in the first picture with the deer, is the WM truck just pulled over waiting for the deer to take care of its business? Canada is really well organized!

Nice pics man.

What do you use to purify water if need be, the altoids tin you can boil water in, but do you have water puifaction?
I was thinking of getting something like that aswell, mabye a pelican 1010 case or soemthing similar but I havent gotten around to it yet.

I carry a small stainless bowl in my Butt pack that Maisy drinks out of, I can use that to boil water in if needed ! Where I hike water is not much of an issue as everything is soaking wet. I can wring some moss out and half fill a mug and there are streams everywhere so even though I could risk getting the Sh*ts I would not dehydrate. Keeping warm would be my biggest obstacle which is why I always practice my fire making !

Nice pictures pitdog. I've been considering doing something similar as you did with my kit. I just keep stuffing fire/water/shelter/first aid into a mid-sized adventure kit med back and the think is about to burst. Plus, there is just too much stuff crammed into it so finding a specific item, usually involves extracting have the crap out of it.

I was looking at the little fishing tackleboxes at CDN-tire and thought I'd make a kit up for each of first aid, fire, shelter/water. But then I looked at the little plastic boxes they had at the store and nothing was as good as what I'd like (I noticed they took most of the fishing stuff off the shelves due to winter). I don't think I need to go a pelican kit or anything like that, but I do recall having a couple of the lure kits with o-rings to make them pretty weather proof.

In the picture where Maisy is carrying firewood - is it just me, or she getting a little big in the butt? Maybe a few less snacks? :D
