Guys,I have one foot out the door here.Headed upstate NY ,for opening day of the NY big game southern zone season. The deer usually win,but it is nice to get away and get in the woods & be with some good friends.

Be back Mon.,and next week I'll post some pictures of a real nice trapper, some gunstocks, and a Case - Bose Swing Guard that I had to have.
See ya' all on Monday,
Tell your deer hunting stories and traditions, what knives you guys/gals like (for deer hunting) & for what reasons, here in this post.I'll check it all out when I get back,Thanks !!

Hey Vince, I got an 8 point this morning, not a wall hanger this year, but hey...i'm running out of wall space anyway:D Good luck and be safe.

Tomorrow morning is our big predawn breakfast that we have every year. About 20 or 30 guys get together on opening day here in the Catskills for a big feast and make sure we know which direction each is headed. This will be my grandsons first season so his Mom and Garnma are both in a tither making sure he is warm enough and has worm soup, hot chocolate and fruit bars. By the time they get done he won't be able to carry a gun. Good luck to everyone heading out in the morning, may all your tags be filled with 10 pointers.

I know it's an honest slip, but that just cracks me up. His maternal units must HATE him.

Good luck to all and sundry. One of my cow-orkers (intentional hyphenation there) nailed a 47" moose last weekend up near the Montana border. We're going to try some moose-b-q next week.

Hey if worms are good enough for trout, they are good enough for my grandson. That is a funny slip up.

Traditionally a good friend and I meet up at his fathers house, who's property we hunt on the evening before Thanksgiving. His father who is somewhat of a backwoods hermit makes a turkey dinner for us that night and we have a bonfire. We hunt Thanksgiving morning and for the rest of the long weekend. This year I took the whole following week off to hunt to. All of the gear we carry is pretty traditional. My buddy's dad shoots an old browning A5, and carries an old schrade sharp finger. My buddy shoots a 1940's Mosien Naggant, and carries a R.J. Richter hunter with stag handle. This year I will carry my Winchester 94 in .45LC, Boker Trapper, and Russell sheep skinner. Good luck to the rest of you who hunt and stay safe. Joe

All i can say is that i hope you all fill your tags and eliminate some of these horned wood rats that are running out in front of us motorcyclists.
Heck, bag an extra 2 or 3 if you can :D

Good luck to you Vince - have a great time.

Going pheasant huntin tomorrow. Gonna be carrying my new old wingmaster in 12 ga. I will be carrying a buck 102 from the 70s, a case trapper knife in stainless and amber bone, and I will lend my dad my brand new 119. Also going deer hunting on the 8th and 9th of december and will be packing the same gear.!!!!!!!!!!!! Going to be great!

Just got back from hunting scaled quail. All the dog found was 2 jackrabbits. We let them run.

Good time anyway. Carried an old 20 guage Zabala, and my Case Wharncliffe Copperlock.

Not really a deer hunting post, but it is a hunting post, and has a knife and a gun in it. :D

Cool replies here.Thanks.
Congrats Darwin !
No deer for me ,but I did see 2 does, had no shot, but had no antlerless permits, either.
A great weekend though, saw 2 bald eagles perching over a river alongside the road,a 410 lb blackbear in the back of one lucky hunters pickup, parked at a tavern.Turkey, grouse, and plenty of deer sightings, too. The local farmer at the hotel where I stayed jumped a big buck, and his buddy unloaded on it,running across the field,he missed! But it was cool to see that action.
We spotted it with binoculars, but it was on his private land.We made sure we let him know, the "city boys" saw him miss.Oh well,it was a good weekend.

It was nice toget up there,a change of scenery is a good thing, you know ?
Thanks for posting,oh yeah,I took some knife pictures today,I'll post a few in some other threads,

Vince, glad to here you had fun on your trip. I hunted locally for a few hours on Saturday and Sunday. I saw one doe, but it is bucks only right now. A friend of mine got a 130lb 6 point last week, and ended up with a 80lb doe some one hit with a car, so I butchered those yesterday. I cant wait to get out in the woods again! Joe

I am hunting in Northern Kentucky, seen a lot of deer but no big buck yet. A guy in this county harvested a buck that had 34 points and may also be the new state record. I have a little 4 pointer that walked by me on 5 different days so far and he is the biggest buck I have seen. Oh well, just have to keep huntin. Good luck to everybody.

I got a chance to go saturday afternoon. No deer, but I did get a groundhog onthe way in.

:D:thumbup:

Great Vince!,

Glad you had the opportunity to get out with family/friends... for me now, that is 90% of it.
410 lbs on a black is very big, no matter what part of the continent you are on.

So... dying to know what you had on your hip and in your pack for knives? :D

I carried that wonderful Burnley you were kind enough to sell me with a pack full of Doziers and Kreins.
The lunch meat and apples haven't stood a chance so far... :p

I took a Case / Bose muskrat in the watch pocket,a 4" Halfrich BP in the BP,and a C May Scandi in the coat pocket & a smaller C May Scandi in my top shirt pocket.I'm glad you are using that Burnley,he makes a great knife!

Great post, it's nice to see that America still hunts...:)

I took my 16 year old son this weekend to the farm I manage. We ran across four does, a spike and a little six point but he could not get a shot at the spike because the elder doe would stand in front of the young buck. The six point stopped for about .05 seconds and then ran mach 4 onto the next property so no shots were fired.

We also ran across two different groups of wild hogs but we passed on a pork dinner to hope for a little venison.

No shots were fired but I got to hear the magical words from my son that hunting with me was his favorite thing to do and "thanks Dad"...:D

Guess what we are doing next weekend...

Sunburst

That's great Sunburst ! Also, teaching your Son the control ,not to take the shot, unless it's right, very important.
