Deer Hunting - Tradition

Hey guys, My Dad got a four point Sat. morning-(opening day of gun here in Okla.) His seventh deer, He's at fort cobb fishing for blue cats tonight. (He's 75 and I can't keep up with him!) I've passed up a few small bucks this year and haven't any does close enough for a shot. Hope my luck changes thur's morning. Good luck out there and be safe.

Well no deer for me on opening day, but I'll be going back out during the long Thanksgiving weekend.

It was nice to be out in the woods for a few hours reminiscing about opening mornings over the years.

I hunt on property owned by a club in Dutchess County. I joined the club after my mother passed away and my father sold their home in Greene county. He moved closer to town, I guess too many memories.
I hunted on my parents property for 30 years. It's funny how some things are taken for granted as never going to change, but that's part of life.

Anyway.... Dutchess county is a shotgun county so I miss not being able to switch rifles for different hunting conditions or moods. I used to switch off between a Remington 7400 in 30-06 and a Marlin 336 in .30 cal.

As for cutlery, I carried my standard Buck 110 and actually kept it on my belt all day even after the hunt. Very robust knife and a real bargain.

Good Luck to all my fellow hunters ( including knife hunters).:)

I managed to get a decent sized 3 pointer yesterday just before dark. We guessed him to be probably around 150lbs or so. I go for meat, don't really care about a trophy to put on the wall, so I was happy. Used a Buck 110 for the skinning. My dad used a Buck fixed blade and we cheated with an electric saw for splitting the pelvis. This was the first time in three seasons that I even saw anything much less touched the trigger. Good way to start the season! Good luck to everybody and safe hunting!

Congrats on the deer!

Congrats for sure on taking that buck. I'm still waiting for the big boy I've been looking for to show himself. A friend of my worked out a place for us to hunt and over the last month we've had a buck (maybe several) making scrapes along the entire tree line of our field. We don't get out much since we both have small kids, so chances of us getting a shot are slim, but we're hoping. I'll keep you posted on our progress. Hunt safe guys and good luck.

My son got a big (for SC) doe & I got a smaller doe. I have not seen any antlers yet this season. I am working to get my son a wall hanger this season, so I plan on letting bucks walk. I got my wall hanger a few years ago, a 22-point SC record-book non-typical (180 7/8 score), so I am hunting meat. My wife won't like another dead deer, at least one I shoot, but I think she'll tolerate one in his room.

6 more weeks of season left!

Just as a side note, maybe it's just me, but it sure seems that the best way to find squirrels is to set in a stand with a highpower rifle in your hands. Head out in the woods with a 22 and the stinkin' things don't stir a bit! I honestly thought I was gonna have to whack one in the head when it jumped on top of the box stand I was in! Now wouldn't that be a whole barrel of fun...a pissed off squirrel inside a big plywood box 20 feet in the air (and don't forget about the loaded .308 in the mix)!!

The season is getting better. I managed to bag a nice 7-pointer tonight just before dark right after the wind died down. I'm taking all the meat to the in-laws tomorrow...they're gonna be happy campers with full freezers! Hope everybody is doing well and bringing home some nice deer.

2 turkeys, 1 Blue Heron & (first time seen) 2 baby squirrels... but no deer!

Still, a bad day hunting still beats a good day at work.
