Deer hunting...with a Knife?

Deer are A LOT tougher than any human. I have seen deer run over a mile with a 30 06 shot in the chest bleeding buckets the entire way. This is called a "dead run". The animal will run on pure adrenalin until it drops over. They will do things you dont think possible. I have even seen them run until they go blind and hit a tree at full speed. Remember deer live in a tough environment most men would die in a few days. Whitetail deer can weigh from 70 to 300lbs and even the smallest can over power a full size man.
For that matter, I would bet a 20lbs pissed off racoon would scare the piss out of most. We evolved using our brain not brawn.

Wait, what? Humans are bigger now than they used to be - and by a noticeable amount too! In most countries the average human being is several inches taller than the average a couple of centuries ago.

Homo Erectus was larger than modern humans, but also not "us," a branch from a common ancestor. Neadertal was actually no taller than homo sapien of the time, but was considerably stockier, with shorter limbs. The trend has been that human populations have tended to become larger and heavier, particularly in about the last few hundred years, accelerating to our modern time. Much of this has to do with improvements in human nutrition. Despite these trends, no one has been able to conclusively prove that we have become smarter at that same rate we have become larger. ;)

Many of the indigenous groups that retain a hunter-gatherer culture are small in stature, though that has clearly not proven to be a major impediment to them. It was never our brawn that brought down the largest of beasts, but rather our ability to plan, organize and communicate. It was organized hunting parties, advancements in the engineering of tools, traps, weapons and making full use of terrain that allowed tiny humans to take down giant animals now long extinct, while simultaneously reducing risks to themselves.

We are simply no competition, pound for pound with most game animals and predators who tend to be faster, stronger and often very well equipped with natural defenses. It was also not common until our modern age of efficient firearms that hunting of large game animals could be performed alone, even if that remains unwise.

20ish years ago a friend and I were on a mission to touch a deer in the wild. After a few hundred hours of hiding in bushes next to game trails the day came when said friend was able to lurch out out of a bush and finally touch a deer.
Lets just say the deer didn't kill him, but it sure taught him a lesson.
We stopped playing that game after that day.

hunting a hog with a knife?.it aint happening...may i suggest a hunter safety course? they are free and available at your wildlife management. in some states such as florida , if you are born after 1971 it is a requirement. but i was trying to spring gobbler hunt with a tennis racket once, of course it was after eating them shrooms:D

Humans don't hunt large game with knives. Even primitive people had sense and use spear.

MAN UP!

How do you think we as people once and for some still do put meals on the table/rock. Many of us see more danger driving on the e-way daily yet scoff at the idea of primitive hunting because of the danger involved with some methods. People are so wrapped up in the "safety" of the modern world they have seem to of forgotten the way we once survived.

Personally I'd tie my blade to a long stick and wait in a tree but if you want to get extra personal then have at it. If anything it will be a experience to remember and tell your grandkids about.

I think someone needs a history lesson.

Start with the average life expectancy of primative peoples and then take a look at what constitutes "primitive hunting".

Chasing down deer that can run in excess of 40mph and jump 10 feet in the air just wasn't on the itinerary.

Humans aren't and never were the apex predators on the planet due to our physical prowess, it's our brain that puts us in the top spot. A fact thats proven true everytime some fool goes after a deer, bear, lion or even raccoon with a knife.

I think it's entirely possible to hunt deer with a knife.

I would try it on a jackalope first though, just to get some practice in.

Hunting a deer with a knife just seems like a foolish idea to me. Deer can take massive damage before they lay down and die, and they aren't exactly defenseless either.

However - With only your knife, its VERY easy to build a primitive trap to snare a dear and then use that knife attached to a long, solid stick to finish it off. Of course, this would also be illegal almost anywhere.

If, however, your idea of "hunting with a knife" is stalking along in the woods with a knife in your hand, or sitting on a game trail ready to "attack", or hanging from a tree with i knife in your hand, your hunting adventure will likely not end well.

Possible doesn't make it a good idea.

It's possible for people to jump over a moving car, seen it done on the ewetube, but the high likelyhood of it not working out well for for the jumper makes it a foolhearty venture.

Dammit boys, don't dissuade OP by bringing facts and sense into this. If he survives this effort, the thread will go full retard.

In the interests of full disclosure, here is a tape of a disadvantaged urban gentleman who went hands-on with a deer he first rammed with his sedan:

OP: Don't listen to the naysayers; Just Do Eeet.

I recall reading missionaries' accounts of Canada and upper New York, where they went hunting with Indians, maybe Hurons, who wore these huge snow shoes and trekked out into the deep drifts to hunt moose and deer with knives. The animals would get stuck in the snow, and the hunter would walk up and slit their throats.

The people on here who say you cannot do it are wrong. They just do not know how to do it, which is not to drop out of trees, like Rambo, or sit along a trail waiting to leap out and knife-fight a deer. There are Indians in the Amazon who kill Jaguars with nothing more than a stout club. You would be surprised the weapons people use to hunt, why I've seen huge tapir killed with a .22--and Jaguars are hunted with those too. It is, of course, dangerous, but that is living in the jungle.

A special Knife Season for deer hunting is on the way or the insane hosp.has a room just for you?

I have taken 41 whitetails to date. 2 with a bow, 1 with a handgun, 38 with rifle. Never ever would I consider taking one with a knife. My dad has taken more than twice that and I have been with him on at least half of his hunts. Deer are alot tougher than you think they are. I saw him get kicked in the shin by one, just a glancing blow with heavy clothing on and the hoof cut through his clothing and cut his shin. I have walked up on wounded whitetails and they tried to get away in a thicket. Kicking wildly trying to get away, they easily broke 1" saplings. Just think, your shin bone is probably less than that. They are a powerful animal, even a small 50lb will mess you up. The noise they sometimes make is enough to freak you out as well. To do this for sport is dangerous and rediculas......... If you were starving to death, I am sure you would do the unthinkable to try and survive.
