Deer knife

Welcome!

When you say "deer knifes" do you mean a hunting or field knife?

BTW its actually knives in the plural not "knifes"

DR....

Try Jantz. They have a wack of them so you will have lots of choice. Prices seem resonable as well.

I made deer knives once, but none of the local deer wanted to buy one :)

Texas Knife Supply, Jantz, Knifekits.com, and USA Knifemaker supply are all good sources for pre-made blades.

I took people toes and made handles for neckers. It was appealing to the deer, but they couldn't come up with the bucks to pay for them. Personally, I think it was all the baskets of antler and deer skulls on the smithy wall that spooked them.

I"m sure they were lovely.

I bet they fawned all over them.

But in this economy, sometimes you just cant come up with the doe.

Before we get too far off topic, it behooves me to say that I have seen a deer foot knife before. It was quite staggering.

It breaks my hart to say this, but we are roeing off course a bit.

My apologies to the OP.
Andy, we sometimes have too much fun here.

Tell us a bit about what specific knives you want to make.

Also, fill out your profile info so we know a bit about you. Age, location, occupation and hobbies, etc. It helps us give better answers and may allow a nearby maker to offer you a shop visit or some help.

In answer to your question. The hunting knives I , and others here, make are usually drop point hunter style. Gut hooks may look cool, but are poor on a knife blade.

Handles can be either wood ( preferably stabilized) or antler. The crown is the most attractive, but a roll ( section of antler) can make a really nice knife. Sambar stag is the predominate type of antler used. Other good antler types are elk and caribou/reindeer.

"Dear Knife,

I am sorry, but we can't go on seeing each other. My wife found out how much my "hobby" is costing, and she is the jealous type. I will miss our long walks on the beach together, way the light twinkled off your bevels, the smooth curves of your plunge lines... oh, I'm sorry, what was I saying?..."
