I received my new Deering Sami Puukko today and thought I would share my first impressions.
The knife is a Sami Puukko made by Deering Knives. The blade is 1/8" 01 steel with maple burl scales, black liners and stainless hardware. The sheath is also made by Deering and is a dangler with quick release ring.
First is the fit and finish... It is absolutely flawless. The handles are perfectly shaped and are perfectly symmetrical. This is absolutely the most comfortable knife I have ever held (and I've held a ton of them).
The blade... The blade geometry is incredible. Wide near the handle and tapering to a fine point. The bevel is highly polished and the grind is dead on. The spine is a perfect 90 degrees and will throw a great spark and make scrapings with ease. The makers mark is neat and clean. I used it today for bunch of feathersticks, shavings and assorted notches and the blade is still scalpel sharp.
The Sheath... The attention to detail continues with the sheath. The fit and finish are again absolutely perfect. There is even a groove cut inside on the folded edge (something rarely seen) to prevent cracking and wrinkling of the leather. The edge is as perfect as it gets and the retention is well, perfect.
I can not find one single flaw in this knife and sheath, and I'm one very critical individual when it comes to my knives. I can truly say that "Deering Knives are second to NONE"!
I also had the pleasure to pick the maple burl for the handles, and that makes it even more special.
A huge thank you to Deering Knives for building this very special blade that I'm very proud to own.
