I just got a paperstone 112 from an ebay seller. Love the knife, great hand feel, much lighter than standard 112. But two of the rivets on one side (lock bar pivot and blade pivot) are not pressed in with the edge flush to the scale. If I run my finger along the handle, enough of the rivet is exposed that my thumb catches on it (not even just the fingernail, the skin of my finger itself). There was no indication that this was a 'blem' or anything.

My question is, are these pins "set once" and that's it, or can it be tightened? If I put the knife in a vise and gently squeeze together the pins, would it snug up?

It will snug up until it loosens up.

Send it back.

This is why I stick to the real 110s, 112s, and fixed blades.

;)

I have an early paperstone 112 factory blem I bought last fall at the factory store that is like that. I thought it was what made it a blem.

RH, I would send it Back to Buck.... Let them fix it... That happens to a lots of knives with pins... even 110s and 112s... It's not a blem... They mark the blade if it's a blem...

Good Luck,
ITE

The rocker pivots stick out on both sides-thats normal but the scales shouldnt be too bad.

here is the best pic I have of a 110, both of my 110s and my 112 have the same rocker rivot set up.

looking at that pic, my scale rivots are a little proud as well.

I bought one of the paperstone 112 buildouts when they were on the web specials page and it has the same issue. You can hook a finger nail under the rivet heads on the off side. Mine wasn't the only one if you check out this thread.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=793244&highlight=paperstone+112

That's the only paperstone 112 I have but I have a couple of the 110 paperstone Ecolites and neither one has that issue.

knives bought on the web specials some times may have what some call a blem
but my thought is that the paperstone is a plastic materal
and it would need the rivets to be over and if pressed to tight might would crack
for me if it is a user and not a display or show knife
well i would not worry of it
if it has FB on it no i really really would not send it back as thoes are sold
cheaper as they have cosmetic issue

if it has that feel of that it could scratch then yes send it back

the store at buck once would sell FB to some one over the phone
however some one sent back a bunch of FB as not acceptable !!

SO the store will not sell FB knives over the phone now due to that
and i can not blame them at all !!!

but you can do as you wish
the above is jest my thoughts for what they are worth

I just returned a 300 series with rivot issues. I am very dissappointed in the quality of the recent Bucks. I sent a small Vantage Pro back this week because the lock would not consistently engage. I can't even get the customer service folks to return an email! I believe I am finished with Buck. I will try Case now.

Taz64, I believe Joe is not at work because he is getting ready for an operation. I know no team is one person but Joe has been our contact and I don't know who is filling in for him. I know for a fact that Joe does return emails.

I just saw that thread and was unaware of his pending surgery. My prayers are also with him.

Case steel is pretty poor.

I doubt anything they have could be better than Buck.

Where did you buy the Vantage that failed you?

Fritz, that pic looks like it was taken of my 112 - looks exactly the same! It doesn't seem to affect function, it just doesn't feel nice and smooth like my brass and wood 110 and 112.

I dont know why your having problems with the warrenty dept but you might want to take a look at my thread from yesterday. I took in some knives and had them back in less than 24 hours. I'll never complain about Buck's warrenty service and beleive its about the best out there. I'd also like to add that I sent a Strider VB into Strider Knives to be refurbished and it took 3 months and a call to Mick Strider to get the knife back to me before my ship date to Iraq. And that was for a $375 knife, not a $30 knife. Try sending something to Case, Cold Steel, SOG, or even Randall for warrenty work and then complain about Buck.

Now that I'm home and have had a chance to inspect the eco's, I find that protruding rivots of all locations are the norm. Whether you like it, dont like it or dont care, it seems that this is designed norm. Both my 110's and my 112 have basically the same rivot installation and all, whether scale or rocker are proud. Dont know how everyone feels about it but it doesnt bother me a bit. They have never caught on my pockets or otherwise and are solid as a rock funtionally speaking.

Here is the best I can do with pics condidering I have been at the Moose for burger night for 3 hours. As you can see, theyre all pretty much the same.

I bougth the large and small models both on Amazon. No issues with the large one, but it is a little big for me to EDC. It stays at home for the tougher jobs. The small one just has issues with the locking mechanism.

I live in Florida so it wouldn't practical for me to just drop them off. I do wish they had a service center close to me.

I thought you might have bought it on the Bay.

There are some guys who solve a knife problem by putting it on e-Bay and letting someone else deal with getting it tweaked up to par.

I stay away from new knives on e-Bay, especially from the amateur sellers who clearly don't sell many.

Actually, I stay away from most new knives.

You were complaining about mailing knives to Buck this week and not hearing anything from the warrenty office? If your in Florida your knives probably have'nt even arrived yet! Your off to a great start, 16 posts and 12 of them negative complaints against Buck Knives. Your other posts show your biased toward Case knives, so just buy them and be happy.

Taz, I had a similar issue with an Alpha Dorado I bought through the Buck website. The liner lock did not engage enough to give me confidence that it would not close on me. I called them and explained. Susan (I think) told me to send it in and they would fix it or replace. I got a call back the day it hit her desk that it was there and they were addressing. The next day, she called me back and said it was fixed, complete with an upgraded steel (CPM 154) blade, and on it's way back to me. I got a perfect knife back in a few days.

Give them a call and they'll take care of you. Good luck.
