Defend the flag, burn it.

Howard

Not sure exactly but when I was active duty Navy I was on the Honor/Color Guard and that is how we disposed of old flags. But As per title 4 of the US Code burning is the proper way to dispose of an old flag.

Hollowdweller, you think and write very well.

I'm glad to see this response from this group. I completely agree, and hope that Congress will snap out of this! After the supreme court decision, the last thing America needs is another limitation of civil liberties.

Once again America destroys the substance by defending the image.

As much as I love this country, America has become like a senile old man, lashing out at illusions and shadows that exist only in his mind, while everything he once believed in and held dear is decaying around him, unnoticed and unmourned.

Alan Watts wrote a great essay which I read years ago. He wrote of the propensity of people to get confused and "eat the menu." Although I've long forgotten the title, I can't help but think of his essay and its thesis when this issue comes up.

What is our country anyway? Brown earth you can squeeze between your fingers? Is it salmon swimming upriver? Or perhaps the neighbors down the block living freely and going out to vote?

Or is it cloth sewn together in a special pattern?

Burning things I suppose, can be a touchy subject.

Things like your draft card, bible, koran, torah, birth certificate, social security card, diplomas, commendations, flags, checks, drivers license, love letters, computers, cars, government buildings, old clothes, leaves, trash,California,New York, all might be burned as long as no-one gets hurt physically.

I'm not too upset at burning inorganic/non-living objects but when it comes to living things I believe there should be some restrictions.

I don't think people should burn babies although it is ok,for some people, to murder them by abortion then burn them. I don't think people should burn their pets unless they have been put to sleep first(i mean the pets put to sleep, not necessarily the people).

I believe people shouldn't burn(electrocute) criminals unless they have been put to sleep first( the criminals not the people).

That's about as deep as I want to think about burning things for now. :(

Amen. Why do they keep focusing on this stuff, and gay marriage, and all this crap that has absolutely nothing to do with my life when folks are losing their pensions they worked their whole life to get, the cost of health insurance is stifling small businesses and individuals, jobs are being exported at a rapid rate, and we still don't really even have any sort of an idea what to do in Iraq. Do we pull out and LOSE and let the civil war begin and allow all the people who were helping us to get killed? Or do we stay in and sink deeper into guerilla war and provide more propaganda and training for terrorists who have infiltrated the country? There's SO many things right now more important.

After 9/11 people started displaying the flag and not just hawks, but everybody to show that we were American and to kind of help us deal with the tragedy. However now I almost feel like the flag is being used as a symbol to stir up a malignant form of nationalisim and rather than a symbol to show the unity of our diversity, I feel like it and the patriotisim stuff is being used to try to make everybody tow the line on some shakey decision making without questioning it.

I feel similar uneasiness. Feels like sleight of hand.

I agree, we have plenty of laws to cover every issue in this country. While I don't agree with a "new law" I cannot and will not respect someone who is foolish enough to think that he/she is making some sort of important social commentary by burning Old Glory (it's been done in the 60's and frankly, it has outlived it's usefulness).
It is not the act that bothers me but the disrespect to all those who have given you that RIGHT to torch it. The fact that Americans died for your right to burn it should tell you something right there. Just because you CAN burn it doesn't mean it is right to do so. Some people have been raised and taught what is right and what is wrong, unfortunately, others haven't. Bottom line, don't make any new "flag law" but don't expect me to stand idly by watching you do what is wrong.

I think right now it's Senators. And I think a phone call or actual letter carries much more weight than an email. They get such a huge volume of email that it's a nuisance.
