Defense against a terrorist knife attack

A quality pair of those gloves, a thick leather jacket, and a sharp wooden steak and your ready to fly. But if your intending on safety, Id get a kevlar vest with the titanium incerts.

All the above sounds pretty good for a late night stroll thru downtown LA or Atlanta or just having a pair of these gloves in your back pocket on a domestic disturbance call might come in handy. I've seen some badass women with butcher knives stand off a whole bunch of folks.

You could always use a tray, shoes on your hands, a wrapped up coat, a large bag etc, etc.

Any number of things can be used to defend against a knife in a closed environment like a plane where weapons/armour are everywhere you look.

I agree and I wondered why the flight attendants didn't use that hot boiling tea water and coffee to scald the attackers.

If there's a knife involved, most likely, you're going to get cut. Using specialised gloves are great if its accompanied by other fight-stopping equipment, like an MP5 or M4 carbine. Otherwise, they are a real nuisance in a fight and if you need to grapple or eventually restain someone. You'll also look like black-glove Michael Jackson, which is sure to ensure that airport security will search the living crap out of you and make you late for your flight.

I think all hypotheticals aside, most people are now aware that if a hijacker takes on the plane, some awful, awful stuff is going to happen, post 9-11. Thoughts that run through my mind are if they are within arms reach, grab on and pummell the #### out of the guy. Might get cut, might even die, but it could be worse.

Just my 2 cents. Pessimistic version.

Cheers.

They didn't, because they keep the temperature under boiling, so that it doesn't cause problems when spilled.

If I was a flight marshall, and therefore prepared to take on a knife-weilding terrorist as part of a day's work, I wouldn't worry about the gloves - kind of a give-away if worn, and no time to put them on if you're in the fight already - but what I WOULD have is two lengths of aluminum bar, one running down each each forearm in line with the stroking/chopping edge of my hands, and held in place by an ace bandage or preferably a neoprene forearm slipover. Worn under a longsleeve shirt. That way if someone slashes you can block with "relative" confidence against getting cut. The split second of difference between his expecting your scream of pain, and you not flinching from the blow, are all the opening you need to plow your own weapon into something soft and fleshy. Repeatedly.

Fishface, I like your thinking. That could make up part of the wardrobe too.

I know one biker who has a similar arrangement but using tough leather on the forearms of his jacket. He got the guy who makes the moulded leather armour" for his pig-hunting pitbulls, to do it. That stuff is tough. I believe its the same thing that medieval armour was made off. I have some spare leather of the same sort which I bought by mistake instead of the proper type for making sheaths. Blades will actually break before penetration. Even a machete swung in full anger only JUST makes it through about 3/4inch.

Don't forget the additional use of anything hard - whack them with it ! Aluminium bars are not far off from a good old Maglite swung liberally around the head region - similar effect.

This could really take off huh ? Protect your forearms, keep the hands free for their intended use. I see a new project happeing ...

Cheers.

All this hi-tech is clumsy, obvious, and beside the point if you're up against a large, armed, and trained group of terrorists, but the one guy on El Al, armed with a penknife, was a loser just waiting to get taken out.

Remember that on a plane, you haven't got much room, which means you haven't got much time, which means if you are on-board security, you've been given your equipment and training ahead of time.

I bet they're ready to go with firearms if necessary. We had an incident here in the US recently where the sky marshals were criticized for making a big deal of what turned out to be a misunderstanding. But they had pistols out and pointing down the aisles, ready to shoot anyone -- any passenger! -- who moved.

I figure a mid-sized carry-on or briefcase could make for a pretty good defencive weapon in such a small space.

travel by boat or train... wear a concrete hat... The solutions offered in this thread, I was wondering... would they also work against a plain, old, common knife-wielding assailant. Or are terrorists some kind of super-beings, extreme shredding machines?

Really, talking about psychosis... Settle down, inform yourself with as much different sources as possible, think for your self and you will find that it is nicer than flocking with the angry (stupid) mob. Pitchforks and torches have no use here and now.
