defense folder suggestions?

texas penal code states that 5.5" is the limit, fixed or folder, no double edges, no daggers/dirks - pretty liberal IMHO, and a law i can live with.........

i have expeienced absolutely no QC probs w/my SIFU, none, nada, zip - i love it -if i was gonna get 1 though, i would get the blade forum special edition (i did, #24/75 w/black blade) it was $30 more, BUT the handle is smooth- which IMHO feels much better to me - if not for the smooth handled 1, i woulda got the CF handles, strictly for looks - but, personally, i do very much prefer the BF spec edition because of this - and hey ya get the D2 blade also, and like that tooooo..................i just love my SIFU,,,,,,and not crazy about the gunting - the blade is too short for me - IF i had trsined w/it, maybe would feel different though...i wish it came in a larger version, i'd buy 1 today - but in tx, prefer something larger - now if i was restricted to a sub 3" blade, maybe would go that way...........

Avoid the Spyderco Military and the Starmate like the plague when it comes to a Defensive Knife. No matter how strong the lock itself is, they have one liner.

The Gunting is a tough knife, I have the Trainer and it is excellent, it just sits way too high in the pocket for me. Draws too much attention in a State where knives are looked upon with disdain.

I usually carry two Emerson Commanders, a righty and a lefty. The Emerson Waved CQC-7 and SOCFK are excellent as well.

check out cold steel voyagers or gunsites. look at the vaquero and vaquero grande, too, although they might be a little too large.

I just bought a Cold Steel Medium Voyager Tanto. It is an awesome very solid knife. The clip points are nice looking too. I got mine for under 60 bucks. Not a bad deal.
Good Luck,

Another choice would be the Benchmade 710. Incredibly strong, and 'small' enough that people aren't as likely to freak out completely when you use it for 'everyday' tasks, while still being big enough to make someone think twice, if it is clear that you are drawing it as a weapon.

I own a Sifu, and am very happy with it. So you may just want to go with your first choice.

P.S., get the LCC - IMHO, it is, by far, better than the Soccom.

Of those you have listed, get the Madd Maxx first, and then you won't have any desire for those other knives any more, I'll bet. Save the money that would have been spent on several cheaper knives, and the custom is almost free.

For a knife that's going to be carried for defense, I'd skip any liner lock or lockback. Not that I hate either one, but why take chances? Never know what the knife might be called on to do.

Oh Yea!!!! I am going to jump in here again and say two words....MADD MAXX!!

Agree with Owen about saving up. If you go ahead and order it may be a few months which might give you the time you need to come up with the cash.

You WILL NOT regret buying a MADD MAXX!!

Why did you guys have to do that? Now I want a MADD MAXX! It would only be the 2nd custom knife I've had. I went and looked at all the pictures of it on his site. What an incredible knife! How does he get all those colors on the handle? About how much do these run anyway?

One of these days I'll save up enough for a Mad Maxx, but I am quite satisfied with my Sifu. It carries as well as a knife half its size and no one can fault it for intimidation value. That blade just looks wicked! It also does a nifty job of opening letters and packages.

I am also one of the minority who prefers the original multiple-finger-groove version to the BladeForums single-groove variant. The grooves give me an extremely secure grip in any of several different positions, including a low hacking grip and an inverted grip.

Antdog,

It's terrible isn't it? All these guys are a bad influence on your wallet...

I would definitely go with the Max; in the Dagger version. It is an incredible knife and draws much faster than any of my other blades. Since I now own one I can confidently say that I have no desire for any other factory knives. Customs, however, are another story. I've already got my order in for the 4" version. What's more I can't imagine any BG who was confronted with this knife to not pee their pants. I know I would!

Peter,
I also put in my order for a 4" version the day I got my MADD MAXX. What blade style did you order on the smaller one? I have the bowie clip blade on my MM and went ahead and ordered the smaller version with the clip bowie also. The MM almost looks like one of the Bagwell Hells Belles when open with that huge clip blade sticking out!

I didn't see anything about cost or waiting time, so my .02 would be:

Custom - Steve Ryan #4. Built to kick ass, big, tough and strong. Any of the Emerson CQC series (5, 6, 7, 8, or 9) would do just fine, too.

Production: Haven't been disappointed with either my Commander or my SOCFK. The Wave can't be beat for speedy deployment.
