Defense/utility knife for fiancee ...

Alright, it's gotten to the point where I must get my wife-to-be a knife. I've had enough "honey, will you cut this string/tag off for me" to last me a lifetime, so I'm in the market to get her a knife of her very own.

I think my Kershaw Blackout is a bit tactical for her, but I do intend to teach her how to defend herself with a knife. Any recommendations along the lines of "innocuous-looking utility folder by day, defense folder by subway" kind of thing? Much obliged!!

Benchmade 730/735. The 730 has red/black handles, the 735 has green/black handles. Very 'sheeple-friendly', but also a very able weapon, if it ever needed to be.

[edit]
Just read your post in 'General'. For under-3", I'd go with the Benchmade 705. A little more 'tactical' looking, but a great knife that's built like a tank. In the 'Reviews' forum, Professor just recently posted a thread about his: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum44/HTML/000042.html. I suggest you take a look.

Also, if you want to get a little more fancy, there are still a few Benchmade Forum knives available for pre-order. They have CF scales, and M2 blades. Certainly something special for your special lady.

Seriously, a Spyderco Native or a Cold Steel Voyager might be worth taking a look at.

Good Evening.
It be Me.

Personally, I think a person should not carry a knife for self defense.
Anyone that is a mugger/attacker is one due to the fact that they weren't hugged enough as a child, and should be treated with respect and sympathy.
Then they should be shot in the nuts with a large caliber firearm.

In any event, since this is a knifeally oriented forum, I'ma gonna move this to General.

Feeling awfully powerful right now,
I remain,

I think a blue Spyderco Delica and the Benchmade 730 are both great suggestions!

I would also suggest the Spyderco Native as a good multi-purpose folder; I feel better stabbing with it than with a Delica. Get one of the shell-inlaid ones so she'll have a knife that looks classy too.

Moving up somewhat in price...

The Benchmade 940 is another nice-looking knife that can be used for defense or utility.

And if she doesn't mind some bulk, a Microtech LCC is about the toughest bladed folder I've ever seen. Closed, it looks conservative and elegant. Open, it looks large and intimidating. And that thick blade still cuts like a razor.

If price isn't a concern, check out William Henry Knives.

They're beautiful, elegant, smooth, sharp, well made, and a little on the small side. All perfect attributes for a ladies/gents knife.
My wife handled the MOP Spearpoint a couple of months ago and she loved it.(Me too by the way)

Also, if she really had too, these knives could slash a BG, but I would have to imagine that this would obviously be only used as a desperate last resort move anyway.

Good luck with your search.

Gone through roughly the same thing with my wife. bought her a couple of SAK's- they remain in the back of the closet collecting dust. Then I saw a Kershaw Blackout and thought "wow, what a nice, versatile little knife for a lady" She hated it. Said it was too hard to start the opening and too awkward of a reach. (She has pretty severe tendonitis due to her many years spent as an Office Grunt) So, in the meantime I'd gotten a Blackie Collins "Buddy System" that she immediately commandeered and has yet to relinquish. That knife still spends more time with her than any other.
Not long after she'd commandeered that one she happened to follow me into a local knife shop with the typical "I'm bored out of my mind, but I'll humor my hubby" look on her face and after looking around for a few minutes her eyes lit up and she asked the clerk about a blue handled 940 Osborne I wouldn't have noticed myself, to summarize a bit, she fell in LOVE with the thing. I got it for her for Christmas and she still says it's the nicest Christmas gift I'd ever gotten her (besides an engagement ring)
So, for me the 940 brought the best of luck. Other runners up included Microtech Mini-Socoms (auto and manual) and a Benchmade Mini-Reflex. Way back in the distance were a couple of miscellaneous Delica sized Spyderco's. As a humorous mention she'd also become quite attached to an Emerson Commander that passed through my hands. think she's still mad at me for getting rid of that one...Good luck in your endeavor!

Not that I'd even try to predict the female mind here, but you may also wanna take a look at some of the new CRKT's that are out there. they LOOK like they might fit the bill....

Have you ever tried to talk to your "femele partner" about the special pros or failures of one of your new knives?
I tell you a secret: She will not be interested!
Try to remember the time YOU were not a knifenut:
You choosed your new knife for look and/or function!!
My wife could choose from round 50 carryknives, and what is she carrying?
A cheap Stiletto (Auto, legal here!)
the same i use for opening letters and nothing else.
Why?
" "It´s so easy, small, light and it fits my pocket" "
When was the last time you decided about a knife with such easy criteria?

What i tried to say:
dont try to talk your wife into a knife you know it`s great, she will onle be bored, just try to take her into a good shop and let her look around!
And after she found one be happy she is going to carry it!

>>Any knife is better than NO knife<<

(( Second secret: first look for a shop that doesn`t sell the cheapest junk!))

My wife gave me a 940 benchmade with the green handles for christmas and she now has informed me that she wants one too.Right now she carys a pearl handled one arm razor she comandered from my knife roll . She also has one of the BuBBa Gum Pink bone handled Case XX toothpicks from sheperd hills and a Victorinox mechanic. But the Kel Tec P32 is the main defensive tool in her purse!

JBoS6,

Depends on the woman, many like the BM940 Osborne but it's kinda large, try the BM770 Osborne if she likes a smaller knife. You might also look at the CRKT Wasp, the blue and black handles are kinda purty.

I also shall be looking for a knife for my wife, and here is how I reasoned it out.

1. Whenever she looks for a pair of shoes, she has about 22 choices...

2. Ditto for choice of handbag....

3. The number of accessories she has to choose from is probably a 6 or 7 figure one...

So here is what I feel I MUST do. I must order about 14 knives and a BladeForums knife bag. Then, no matter what the occasion, she can carry a knife that matches her shoes and handbag and does not clash with her other accessories. I suggest you do the same.

Only $4786.77 left to raise, and this gift is as good as under the tree this year.

I agree with the Gerbil,I feel that a knife is a last ditch defense weapon against an aggressor.Someone pumped up on drugs will take many slashes and not stop or worse will make them xtremely mad.Buy her a pistol and both learn to use it,a .38 will stop an attacker.I love my knives but they do have their place as any special forces personnel or fight xpert will tell you ,you dont want to get into a knife fight. When it comes to your loved ones lives dont fool around.

good call, marsupial. knife fights are definitely not good under any circumstances. if you fight with knives, you will be cut. in almost every instance, too. and i also agree with the sentiment that a doped-up opponent will not be so easily deterred (first-hand experience).
if the knife is to be for defense purposes, please think again, my man.

sharp blades are friendlier than sharp tongues.

That's my issue -- I live/work in and around Boston, which flat-out stinks when it comes to CCW. Further, my fiancee has a big issue with guns, but would carry a knife. *shrugz* Ya gotta work with the options you're given! :-)

I have bought my wife alot of knives over the years but the only two she ever liked was the Leatherman Micra and the Victorinox Camper (she specificly wanted one with a corkscrew and a saw?).
Even though she liked them, she still would'nt carry them. The Leatherman went in the dash and the Camper went into her purse.

BUT, all of that changed when I bought her a Spyderco Delica!
She really likes the knife and she actually carries it. It's not too big for her small hands (she has trouble with larger Spydercos) and it's very light weight. She also likes the clip because alot of her pants don't have pockets and she clips it to the waistband (good for skirts too). I suppose she could even clip it to her bra.

So, I was happy and she was happy...UNTIL...she saw a picture of the Spyderco Vesuvius!
Now she wants one of those.

I hope this helps.
Good Luck.

Thank you all VERY much for your input! There were tons of great ideas, and I had some idea of what I might get her ... until I brought her into a store and had her handle them.

The Spydercos I thought she might like? Nope, doesn't like the spydie-hole.

The Benchmades I thought were a good bet? Nope, the "handles are too small".

Not the Gerbers, not the S&W's, not the CRKT's .... And none of this plastic-handle stuff for her!

And who needs 2.5", 3" or 3.5" when you can have 3.75" of titanium-handled, ATS-34 bladed SOG Vision?? (Insert Tim Allen-inspired barking here.) I couldn't believe it! She loves the thing, and we should hopefully have it shortly. She can't wait!!

I love this woman.
