Defensive knife for jogging.

I'd think any of the lightweight (FRN) folders from Spyderco would do the trick. Choose the ones with the metal clip for good retention. Some possibilities:

Delica
Calypso Jr.
Native
Goddard Lightweight

I carry a Schrade Switch-It clipped in my waistband. It doesn't bounce around and the clip blends with our black PT gear. Just wipe the sweat off and you won't have any problem.

How does everyone think the Benchmade Tether Knife would hold up in the aformentioned jogging situation? Would it be very prone to rust ?

You need to consider where and where you jog. I jog regularly through a relatively nice residential part of San Francisco, both in the morning and evening after dark. Since I'm not jogging out in the woods or in a secluded or dangerous area, my major concerns are dogs and (much less likely) muggers.

I never tried a neck knife, since they are illegal in CA (fixed blades have to be worn openly on the waist), and I know that I couldn't stand having the thing bouncing around. I tried very lightweight folders (Dozier Thorn) clipped to my shorts, but if they were clipped tightly enough to not get lost, they were also slow to draw.

Eventually, I settled on pepper spray in my weak hand and a BM Griptilian in my strong hand (I stash my keys in my front yard before I start). Both are legal, so I don't care if anyone sees them, but I think that both are pretty inconspicuous. Joggers in SF don't draw much attention. During the day, when an attack by a 2-legged assailant is pretty unlikely, I sometimes carry a mini-Griptilian, but usually it's the full-size model.

A folder in my hand is faster to present than a fixed blade in any kind of sheath, plus the full-sized Griptilian should make a decent impact weapon. If I was in an environment where I felt like the pepper spray and folder were not enough to ensure my safety, I'd change my environment.

You mean you actually carry all that stuff... in your hands... while you're jogging?

Man, I'd buy a tread mill ;)

Omigosh! I never thought someone at Bladeforums would accuse me of carrying too much stuff. Now I know I've got a problem.:)

I think tribalbeeyatch forgot to mention that he's not a secret agent. :)

Oh yeah, did I forget to tell y'all that?;)

Thanks for the great responses, everybody! I really like the lines on the LaGriffe, and it seems like something in titanium would really be the ticket for protecting against the sweat factor.

How do you guys wear your neck knives? Do you keep them sort of high up so that they don't flop as much? Do you wear them on the chains, or do you put them on paracord with a short length of chain to act as a breakaway?

The GIN-1 in my Tether Knife has been very rust-resistant. I carry it in my pocket during the summer months and use it in damp conditions as a utility knife. I rinse it off after use, apply a little TuffGlide, and it's been fine.

I'm not sure how well it would perform as a defensive tool. The grip is good for a knife that small, but not as secure as the LaGriffe. It also has finger grooves, which may or may not fit your hand.

Try the Spyderco SPOT or the Smith & Wesson Badge Knife. I used to carry the S&W knife for running and never had rust-problems. My SPOT arrived ysterday, I´ll try it for running tomorrow.

I think there is a Ti version of the LaGriffe...anyway, if you like that style, you may also want to look at Warren Thomas...he makes stuff out of carbon fiber or titanium with tungsten carbide impregnated cutting edge...LOTS of models to choose from..here are a few of his designs

As for flopping around...you might want to look at a Bladerigger neck rig :)

In total agreeance with RL.

The titanium LaGriffe, or a ti neck knife by Warren Thomas. When my 20 year old daughter jogs, she carries a WT necker that is a ti/cf laminate. It has a pink cord-wrapped handle. I gave it to her for her 18th birthday.

god, i wish i had a father like you~

i have the lagriffe, and i really like it, but it swings around quite a bit when i jog
if it were up to me, i'd take the ayoob razerback from MOD in an arm sheath
