Define "Camp Knife"

I never laugh at a man because of his choice in cutlery.
If a fellow camper wants to carry an ax, a 12" bowie knife, and a chainsaw too, that's fine with me....after all, he's the one that has to carry it.
And if you disagree with my opinion that's okay too, but I'm just sharing what I've learned over the years.
And I've seen it way too often while camping....the guy with the least camping experience will usually either have no knife at all, or a very large knife.

i've been known to backpack in a 30lb 1960's Stihl Lightening with a 34 abr and .404 pitch skiptooth chain on occasion...... ;)

you cna build some really big shelters!

I would at very least submit that the guy with the very large knife came a little more prepared then the guy without one. Perhaps a more polite way to say it is that people tend to err on bringing a larger knife then they usually need. Of course this all gets thrown out the window when you start the 'what if' scenarios this sub-forum is so famous for :)

Personally I like a 4-6" knife and feel more condemned to go the 4" route out of respect for social constraints one is faced with these days. I sure as heck don't think a SAK meets everything I want in a knife.

My bushman bowie or possibly just a regular tramontina machete would be my camp knife, I guess.

Here are some camp knives for those "experts" who hate large knives. I did include one small one.

There seems to be a good bit of consensus when people refer to a “Camp Knife” but that it divides between a big chopper and a smaller 4 to 6 inch knife suitable for kitchen duty. Many people mentioned the axe or hatchet leaving all the small tasks to a small blade.

I tried to edit some of the responses along the lines of the original post condensing duplicate mentions and collecting singular ones to come up with the following definition and list of expected tasks for such a blade. If you see some of your words mixed with everyone else’s that was the point.

Definition - A Camp Knife would be a fairly large, heavy broad-blade, 7 to 10 inch, kind of a beater, a really butch kitchen knife, or a Leuku or similar large knife which could be used for all the required chores in camp that your primary knife might not be able to. A camp knife would be one you'd be less likely to carry on your person, something that would be intended to be used in a bush camp of some sort for basic camp chores.

Shelter

I find myself using two blades more than any others in the bush, a machete and a scandi of some sort. All of the tasks that were mentioned here I do with those two blades. Contrary to KGD’s opinion I don’t butter toast with a machete (smashes the little tub too much) but I have used them to butcher deer. They also come in handy harvesting wild edibles like palm hearts and bamboo shoots.

I’m sure that people will add more to this thread before it drifts off out of control. You guys did a good job. Thanks for your thoughts. Mac

the size of a blade is not indicative of the carrier/users skills. To paint a user as inexperienced due the their choice of blade is a bit much. Better to use a large blade safely for a small task than to use a small blade unsafely for a large task.

simple soultion is to carry many blades! after all we are knife users.....
