Definitely a difference in size between large Schatt and large Queen toothpicks...

That's a great comparison Jimmy - thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am usually looking at GEC knives since their fit and finish are what I consider consistently very good. I feel it is a good bet to order a GEC and get a good knife right out of the box. But, since I got my S&M toothpick, I keep looking at more S&M knives which of course causes me to look at Queen also. I have somewhat of a mental list of what my next couple knife purchases might be and not afraid to keep some S&M/Queen near the top.

Plus, for me with my condition, my S&M is the smoothest operating knife that I own right now.

Yeah... nice to have these choices. I have a few Buck knives, they had to be included, but they are just not exciting to me. I have enough of them to be represented in my collection. Utica, they too are represented, and feel they are okay, but feel my 6 specimens are all I need of their current lot. Then there are my Canal Street (just two).. but with one out on repair, I will have to see if they continue to gain some ground in my colection or not. It seems that the three companies I favor most are Case, GEC, and Queen (as far as current makers are concerned). I love my Forge De Laguiole, and though they have a ton of different scale options and other bells and whistles... just the one specimen is enough French flair, for now :-) Case can, and does, put out a very nice product, but... the more old school manufacturing of both Queen and GEC, make them more desirable to me. Between Queen and GEC... that is a tougher choice. I do believe that GEC has a more consistant record for f&f ovet Queen, but now Queen under new ownership, that may level off. Queen has that true history behind it, it not being a recent company start up that makes old school repros.. but rather it being a true last of the DoDo birds. Queen is an actual old school company, making old school knives, using mostly old school methods. The fact that they can be had for a few bucks less than GEC, and even offer more for the money in most cases, well, does not hurt my attraction to them ;-) Choices, competition... all good! The ones that make good product, are usa made, have good customer service.. I will help keep in business :-)

I should have added to my previous post - I tend to lean toward knives made in Pennsylvania which encompasses GEC, Queen (S&M) and Case. Just one of those weird things in my mind - living in rural Pennsylvania all my life it just gives me a little more of that "good fuzzy" feeling I gues......

No doubt, your state has the creme of the remaining crop. My state, NY, carries the foundation of those knife firms in your state. Both Case and Schatt & Morgan has their start in NY State. And, of course Queen was an offshoot of S&M. Then, GEC, which came about by being started by a Queen employee. And how about NY.... well, sadly, the last big names (camillus & schrade) have gone DoDo! Of course there is Schrade's offshoot... ex employees starting Canal Street... and there is Utica, but they would really have to step up their game to be more competitive. Not too many firms left making these toys of ours... but they are clinging on! ;-)

Nah... I get a certain enjoyment from this new traditional pocket knife collecting... A knife as a tool is great... but my having one at my disposal at all times, is all I need. I simply don't need more than one small knife for my daily needs. It is kinda like my being an athiest... I am fine with others having their beliefs, I only want them to respect mine (which is hard for many god believers to do). Kinda the same here, I collect my knives, others carry one or two, and yet others carry a bunch (by rotating them into edc)..... all good, I do my thing, you all do yours, no need to persuede me otherwise ;-)

Agreed...I usually carry more than I use ...as with my CCW pistol (which is fine with me!) I sometimes make an excuse to use my knife like opening chip bags etc when I can easily tear one open! :D

Hey! So, I figured it out. That S&M toothpick is part of the File & Wire Series #5, and is called the Mr. Morgan Daddy Toothpick, intended to be a full half inch larger than the normal 5" variety. PM for link.... not sure if I can post it here.
