Anyone familiar with this make of hammer and/or have any idea to their value? The one in question is a 50 lb monster, it weighs 3800 lbs. compared to the LG 50 lb'er at 1800 lbs. It has a motor, not shown or mounted. I have the opportunity to purchase it but have no idea what might be a fair price. It appears to be in good condition, nothing loose, broken, re-welded etc. Again it has a new 5hp motor which needs attaching along with the pulley and another set of dies.

Please click on link if you would like to see photos of it. There is also a little giant in the photos, but it looks a little rough and I am more interested in the D&E at this point.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

That looks like a good hammer.

Is that a rubber belt that transfers power in the linkage ?
horizontal and going mouldy ?

I say if the price is right, buy them both and flip the LG to help pay for this one.

Try at I Forge Iron too, you may get more info there

That belt is leather. It was supposedly put on when the current owner purchased it approx. 5 yrs ago.

Thanks,
Ed

I am not familiar with that hammer, but it sure is impressive!

It's definitely hell for stout. The weight is about the same as my 100# LG. I love the beefy, over-built design. That linkage for power transfer is certainly unique!

Looks like you'd need a new set of dies (unless you really want to forge out round rods ;) ).

The value is a tough one... A 50# ram is not considered a large hammer, but you've got the weight of a much larger hammer, along with a solid design, and a brand new motor worth ~$400-600 or +++ (depending on make etc).

Just as a factor to think about, a 100# LG in good condition with a new motor (on the West coast anyway) is going to be in the $4,000 - $5,500 range. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say at least $3k for that hammer....

Parts might be hard to find--- but I doubt that will be too much of an issue with a hammer that stout.

I hope you are able to give it a new home and share some pics/video if you do!!! :)

I had leather and then edited it for rubber.

I just can't imagine leather that thick, is is laminated ?

I imagine you would have to replace that.
I'd have a look at the synthetic power transmission belting.

Ild love to have that hammer, and no toggle arms to try and adjust.

Sam, it might just be my monitor, but it looks to me like that linkage is a piece(s) of something like a 13/14 oz leather rolled around to a loop that's 4 layers thick (that would be around 3/4" -7/8" thick).

Hi guys,
Yeah it is damn sure heavy duty. The leather is three layers. I didn't measure them but I would guess that they are approx. 0.1875" to 0.5" thick for a total of 1-1.5". Not sure if it is laminated or not, but it is awful thick. While it is a little moldy, it was supposedly brand new when purchased 5 years ago and it has been inside out of the weather since it's arrival. I will play that by ear and at some point will probably change it to a synthetic belt. The biggest obstacle is going to be loading and unloading the beast.

Meant to add that it does have another set of dies.

It may be a while, but once it is up and running I will post some photos.

Thanks for your input.

I'll keep that in mind. I have a trailer which will haul it. My plan is to use my nephew's 60hp tractor (my 35hp won't touch it) and hopefully the front end loader will lift it. If that doesn't do it i will get a forklift to load it.

thanks again of the input.

I know you said you have a trailer... but the getting on and off the trailer is usually the big hang-up.

I rented this when I moved my big shop tools, and it was money VERY WELL spent. :) Skates, pipe/rod rollers, or a pallet jack help- A LOT. :)

Nick,
I agree that little trailer might be the ticket. I will have to check on availability of one of those.

Got bummed last night, guess i misunderstood the guy originally. Found out I was off on the price by a grand, so now i'll have to save a bit longer.

thanks.
