"partial refund"......umm no. Full refund Yes.
Always use a insured box. From the price of the shipping it doesn't seem that you insured it. ....I hope this lesson wasn't to expensive.
This sucks, I feel for both of you.

That blows, I hope it wasn't a expensive lesson.
I think the fair thing is to refund the buyer, file your insurance claim with USPS and use flat rate boxes from now on.

That's on the seller 100%. Use a box. I'm not sure what the rules of your exchange are, but in my opinion it's up to the seller to pack the knife adequately. I always use the flat rate box with packing material, covered entirely in tape. It's only a dollar more I than the envelope.

You should also blur the addresses when you post them online.

It's the seller's responsibility. Why would you choose an envelope over a small box? Why no insurance? And the buyer should get a full refund. No question.

I agree with what was said before, but additionally the buyer should ask his mailman if he's a moron. "Good news, I am here to deliver your empty envelope." Postal workers baffle me sometimes. (Just to clarify, the postal worker is the moron, not the poor guy who got an empty envelope)

Kspain Kspain this might have been better placed in the GBU section of the Exchange (maybe?). Having said that, afaik, the buyer paid for something they have not received, so they either need to receive the knife they were promised in a timely fashion or get their money back. If it were me, I'd be issuing them a refund and then making a claim to be reimbursed by the postal service (assuming you had the package appropriately insured).

Best of luck to you both.

Haha I was thinking that too.

And why is this thread all of a sudden deleted? Hmm...

Yeah definitely sending a refund, all I’ve received from this forum are knives in padded envelopes never thought that was something to worry about.

Yeah definitely sending a refund, all I’ve received from this forum are knives in padded envelopes never thought that was something to worry about.

The few knives I've received thus far from fellow forum members after I'd bought them off of the exchange here all arrived in my mailbox inside of padded envelopes; some inside the envelopes in their original boxes etc. while others had just the knife.

While my or your positive experiences with this packaging method thus far might have convinced you they're fine, it's definitely not the best way to ship a knife as is clearly evident from your current situation.

The economical reasons for saving a few dollars on the packaging method are always worth it until you have to refund a buyer the cost of a halfway-decent knife. Likewise, this is why it's good to purchase the appropriate amount of insurance when shipping something like this.

Never us PayPal F&F and always properly package and insure shipments. These two things are good guidelines to live by

I'm super anal about good packaging as the sender, the most expensive knife I've ever mailed, my CRK, off for professional sharpening, I double boxed. Written on the interior box was my return address along with "return postage guaranted, C.O.D.". I dictated to the the sharpening service to reuse my interior box inside their outer box upon returning it to me.

I don't always do that but I ALWAYS wrap EVERY SIDE of the box in tape. If the package doesn't arrive that's what shipping instance covers, MY insurance the item arrives with the package is that 01¢ of tape and packaging that I do...
