Hi all. Really appreciate everyone's thoughts about their knives over the years. Here are some of mine on the Delica 4 and the Benchmade Mini Griptilian.
They are very close in blade length, weight, quality and price. Action on the Mini's axis lock is slightly smoother and closing it is slick--it's fun to just flick it open and closed. However, closing the D4 is also one-handed and more positive because I close it with my thumb so I know it's closed--sometimes the Mini will close part way or close too hard and bounce back open a little bit. I don't have a preference between hole and thumbstud--they both work equally well for me--I do think the hole looks cooler, though. The Mini's blade is swedged on top making it more pointy and perhaps better at stabbing and starting a cut; however, I've never had a problem with the D4 in this area. The Mini looks less scary; more like a standard pocket knife. The D4 looks all business; perhaps too scary for some public uses. The blade steel on both is great, so no big advantage to me either way there. The handle on the D4 is thinner than the Mini, which is nicer in the pocket, and FRN is my favorite handle material; it's grippy and warm feeling and the shape combined with the thumb ridge on the blade locks the knife in my hand without the limitations of finger choils. The Mini's handle is thicker, but that doesn't make it fit my hand better; it's just too short (3 1/2 fingers) and the material doesn't feel as nice as the D4. Also, the finger guard on the Mini puts your grip farther from the blade than the D4 giving less control but a little more reach, which to me isn't a good trade-off. In the final analysis, the D4 just feels great; it never feels too small nor too big. The Mini grip feels too small for my only edc; it could make a great loose pocket knife, however, I carry a Leatherman Juice S2 in my right front pocket everyday and its 2 1/2" blade already fills that role. Hope this helps anyone trying to choose between these two knives.

This needs to be posted on a Benchmade Forum. :D

I feel your love. The D4 is my favorite lockblade.

I own a d4 wave and 2 mini grips. 556 and a 558. Both the D4 and the 55X models are great. I love the d4 due to how thin it is. I love the axis on the 55X. You really cant go wrong either route. Thats why I usually carry both.

However, I just bought a caly3 to take the role of my BM 14210(similar size to the 55X, sent for repairs)so now that has taken my EDC spot.

Both knives are great and each has pros and cons over the other.

Yeah,BM looks more decent than spyderco.I use BM551 as my edc.I am not problem to use it at office room.although I like spyderco very very much and d4 is smaller than 551,but office lady said they were afraid of it:rolleyes:

Nice review. I have several models of both and it's a tossup which one I take when I want a tough knife for warehouse work. The D4 is a simpler knife with a backlock and a large, easy-to-use opening hole.

The mini-Grip is a bit more compact and the standard blade shape like the Cabelas D2 has is sometimes easier to fit into tight spaces to cut nylon strapping material or tight zip ties. And I really, r-e-a-l-l-y like BM's D2.

I do find the tiny thumb lugs a bit trickier to use than the hole in the D4 and I can only get 3 1/2 fingers on the handle. There's no excuse for that when the same size handle in other configs (14210, small Sebbie, etc.) gives me a four-finger, secure grip. The D4, of course, has no grip problems whatsoever for me... perfect fit.

I agree, Dale. The Mini grip is nicely sized for many jobs--it's just a little too small for my clipped edc and it's a little too big for loose pocket carry; I think 3 1/4" is about tops for that. I'm keeping it in my growing collection because it's fun to flick it open and closed when I'm reading BladeForums. :)
Anyway, I love the Delica and Endura 4's, Sal--keep up the great work. I always look to Spyderco 1st for a new knife.
