Delica 4 or Native III

If by chance you ever do encounter a problem, just send it back to Spyderco and they can check it out.

Personally, I think the chipping "issue" with S30V gets blown out of proportion. It's a pretty tough steel. With proper heat treatment and production you should not have any issues within the scope of regular EDC use (in other words, don't try and chop a cinder block with it ;)). If you find you strongly prefer VG10 to S30V you could always try to trade or sell one Native in order to get the steel you want.

I've had my original Native with s30v for over 3 years now and have used it pretty hard. I have seen no sign of chipping on it or the 3 other s30v blades that I own. I too think that the chipping issue is way over blown.

I've got quite a few S30V knives from several companies... no problem with the steel in any of them. They all get used for EDC type chores around the house and yard and some of the larger ones get taken to the woods when camping / hiking. They carve fuzz sticks, trim bushes, whittle on dead wood to pass the time, etc. No problems with S30V yet.

I don't cut metal wiring with S30V blades and I do with VG10, but I agree that VG10 is a somewhat tougher steel, even though it doesn't have quite the edge holding that S30V has.

If you've already got a VG10 D4 coming, why not keep the S30V Native and see how it performs compared to the VG10 D4? Then you can post a review and let us know what you find.

Yeah I prayed about it last night and decided to keep it. For 40 bucks i'll get to try it this different blade steel that apparently a whole lot of people really love. I do have another question though.
How do you have vg-10 as a tougher steel, and s30v with better edge retention? I would think the tougher steel would have better edge retention.

The harder steel typically has better edge retention.

This should help you in terms of understanding steel, its properties, and the terminology used to describe it: http://spyderco.com/edge-u-cation/steel.php

There's lots of good stuff there!

What 3G said. Harder steel is more abrasion resistant, so it usually has a better edge holding capability (depending on the HT, of course). That same quality of hardness can make it less impact resistant, however. When I said "tougher" steel, I was referring to the steel's ability to take impacts without chipping.

A steel like VG10 or AUS8 or 154CM won't hold an edge in cutting tasks as long as something like S30V or ZDP189, but it can absorb heavier impacts from things like chopping or batoning with less chance of chipping or breaking. This is useful in larger folders and FBs that are going to see heavy use outdoors.

Alright that makes sense thanks guys. Well I got the delica in the mail today. I love the way it feels in my hand. It feels really solid and I really like the blade shape. The native doesnt feel as good in my hand as the delica. But I can guarantee you that it will make it in the EDC rotation just like all the others. I really think it comes down to a persons own hands. The delica just flows with my hands and fingers, the native fits in the hand but my middle finger feels really spread apart from the others with the index finger on the choil. But if you take your finger off the choil it feels like the handle is a little small. Which is different compared to the caly 3, it you can take your finger off the choil and it still feels comfortable. So overall, I really like the delica, and I really like the blade on the delica and the native. So no doubt both will be carried

today my wife surprised me with an early valentines present. She went to walmart and got the original native. Well I was really wanting to get the number III model if I got one. She said I could return it if I wanted too.

Personally, I would never return, sell, give away, or otherwise dispose of a knife that was given to me as a gift, especially by my wife. What a great gift to get from your wife. That was her way of telling you she loves you, and she supports your interest in knives. How great is that? You are a lucky man.

PS- I know you've decided to keep the knife, just throwing in my late $.02. I don't mean to offend.

None taken vautrain, I really do have the greatest wife ever. She supports me in everything I do, even all the tools I have to buy for work. Im a mechanic, so that means a whole lot. Just to clarify though I was never going to get rid of it, I was just thinking of swapping it for the native III. Not just return it all together I couldnt do that. :D

since you have the caly 3, which I'm looking at getting how comfortable is it in your pocket for edc? I wear dress pants all day, so i wasn't sure if it would be to bulk or heavy.

Well im a mechanic so I wear a uniform to work, the pants are like dress pants they are part polyester, part cotton all that. Honestly it feels awesome in the pocket better than both the delica and the native. It rides so low that when you put your hand in your pocket you dont even notice it. Since it rides low the knife goes to the back of your pocket and the blade and handle will go back into that extra area of fabric that is usually in dress pants. Honestly I love that knife.
