Delica 5 design input

Sal wrote last year on the Spyderco Forum that they have prototyped versions of the Delica and Endura 4 with a choil but decided against it because the models still sell like crazy and a lot of non-knife people prefer both of these models over any of the models with a choil.

Hmm... I'll cast a dissenting vote. Spyderco has so many models with choils already - Sage, Chaparral, Manix, PM2, Military, Stretch, Native, Caly, Dragonfly, Police... there's really not that many in-house Spyderco designs that don't have a choil. I don't have anything against choils - I quite like the ones on the Para2 and Manix. But at the same time, it's nice to have an option where they're not present. I actually really liked that about the Endura and Delica both. Sometimes I want to get close to the edge, and sometimes I want a knife that says, "here is your cutting edge and here is where your fingers go... and ne'er the twain shall meet."

I'm with this guy.

An argument is many people don't like them for various reasons. Another (one that Sal has stated IIRC) is plenty of Spyderco knives have a choil, and not every one should have one for the sake of having a wide variety .

does that mean some spydercos should be sold without blades? or handles? just being sarcastic

As shown by the OP's pic, adding a choil will not change the knife other than aesthetics. If a choiled Delica/endura comes out and you hate choils, guess what, don't use it. It will perform the same way as a Delica4. Now if you think its ugly well that is another story. Looks wise, a choil doesnt bother me and I find it very useful.

This has come up over and over again... And my suggestion OVER and OVER again is to have a choiled AND a non choiled version. Win-win. I imagine that the only adjustment in build is the blade regarding a choiled version, pretty sure Japan makers can handle it. I own a Meadowlark and prefer it over the D4 besides the steel....and deployment hole hehe.

Does nobody but me notice that they already have a choiled delica, and it is called the Caly 3. I used to carry delicas until I got a choiled one (caly), and now I only carry a caly 3. Oddly, they even have slip-joint choiled delicas too - that are made in the USA - called UKPKs. They have wharnies, they have leaf-blades and they have drop points for that one. I don't get why people would rather complain about why a delica isn't a caly when they can just buy a caly and get what they want. Sadly, spyderco is no longer doing the g-10/vg10 caly models anymore. Probably due to demand.

I would prefer the exact opposite of the OP. I would like to see the edge go back to the scale like on the Tenacious series of knives.

Hi FCM,

Consider the inventory requirements for each model and one must think carefully. In business, excess inventory can slow growth.

Hey Psychophipps,

That's another of the same type of decision. Many don't like the edge to meet the handle and like the security of the distance from the edge.

Also, from a designers point of view; Ergos are critical to, control, comfort and safety and must be carefully condered for those requirements when creating a design. A finger choil does change the postion of the fingers on the handle (whether using the choil or not) and is a challenge, especially when designing the knife iin a closed postion. Carry is just as important as choils and edges, "unnoticable" when not needed, but a powerful cutting force on the end of your hand when used.

I don't dislike choils but I don't use them. Given that so many other models have choils, I say leave the Delica and Endura alone. They're damn near perfection the way they are now.

A Caly 3.5 is very close to the size and style of a Delica and it has a choil. So I say make a FRN version of the Caly 3.5! I'd love to see that!

Another vote for no choil. I'm not against them, but there are many other choices with choils, and i like the Delica the way it is.

I'm fine with FRN so long as they don't ever ditch the steel liners. Otherwise it will have that plastic-y feel the griptillians have.

I'm pretty happy with the Delica as it is now, clip included. As mentioned above, the Delica is one of the few Spyderco's without a choil and I kind of like it that way. BTW, the purple Delica looks pretty good.

Sal - are there plans for a Delica 5 & Endura 5? If there are, what kind of changes are in the works? If you can't say here, I understand, but I figured I'd ask.

I have quite a few Spydercos, but the Delica 4 and Endura 4 are the models I come back to the most. (And the Tenacious too, but not as often.)

And as far as I'm concerned, I think the Salt line (handles based on the old Delica & Endura handles) is about as perfect as a knife can get. Lightweight, rust-proof, and easy to carry.

The only thing I would like to see changed on the Delica is the blade grinds. I would love to see a nice hollow ground Delica, like you get on the centofante.
But thats really only preference thing.

Since we're sharing thoughts:

If a choiled Delica/endura comes out and you hate choils, guess what, don't use it.

Sure. Same can be said this way - If a non-choiled Delica/Endura comes out and you hate non-choiled knives, guess what, don't use it.

Does nobody but me notice that they already have a choiled delica, and it is called the Caly 3.
Given that so many other models have choils, I say leave the Delica and Endura alone.

Sometimes I want to get close to the edge, and sometimes I want a knife that says, "here is your cutting edge and here is where your fingers go... and ne'er the twain shall meet."

Those pretty much sum up my feelings, especially the last one. I love my G-10 Dragonfly and carry it more than my Delicas. But when I want a bit of distance from the blade, a feeling of security, I don't just choke back on the Dragonfly - I grab a Delica. Or the Manbug.

Sal - Over the years I've had Delica 2s, 3s, and now 4s. You keep getting it right, but better every time. Please keep the Delica choil-less.

Oh, and Sal -
there needs to be g10 options for the delica.
This. I know it was spendy and didn't sell well, but man were they cool. Deeply regret selling the one I had. Bring 'em back, please.
