Delica 5

Thanx for the interesting suggestions. It seems that most of the suggestions are more individual preferences rather than enough to require new tooling.

No choil, not ever. An improved lock would be okay. I would like to see a new handle material besides FRN or G10.

Honestly, I don't think the Delica needs a new version at this point (or maybe ever). Over the last couple of years I've read a few reviews from new Delica owners saying it would vie for pocket time with a small Sebenza. That's a ringing endorsement.

The only thing I'd like to see from the Delica (and Endura) is a return to a price point closer to where it used to be. The cost of the Delica has gone up in a big way over the last decade. When the D4 first hit the market, the street price was $40-42. Currently, street price is $74.72, and even without map would still run $63-64 dollars at best (this is not a post to complain about MAP). Other knives have managed to stay fairly consistent in price over time. The Spyderco Tenacious, for example, has gone up by a much smaller margin over the last 9 years. I've currently got my D4 FFG sitting on my desk here at work between my Ontario Rat 2 and Steel Will Mini Cutjack. Both of those give me as much knife as the D4 for under $40. Sure, the Steel Will is made in China, but it has fit and finish that are a huge upgrade from the byrd Meadowlark and are on par with the Delica. Yes, they're liner locks, not lockbacks. I've just felt for awhile that the Delica is losing some ground to other knives that offer most of the value for significantly less money. The stingy guy in me says that maybe it's time to look for a new maker in Taiwan (instead of Japan) for the Delica. The other half says that Spyderco has long-standing relationships in Seki City that they don't want to sour. Also, the Delica is great as is, and why mess with success.

The only two things I can think of as possible improvements for the Delica right now are:

As previously mentioned, maybe the improved back lock notch as in the Native 5;

And maybe a clip more like on the Native 5's, or the PM2. The clips on the Delixa and ?Endura 'seem' to be softer and more prone to be accidenly bent if caught on something.

As far as a finger choil, IMO the Delica doesn't need it. There are already plenty of models to choose from that do have finger choils.

I would also add that the Delica handle offers plenty of grip surface for a full four-finger grip without a choil. A knife like the Native 5 requires a finger choil to make it usable by those with larger hands.

If I was to suggest an alteration to the Delica line of knives it would be to make an addition to the Delica range and add a 3.5 inch option .
I altered a Caly 3.5 into what I call my Delica 3.5 , it proves that you can get a longer blade into a Delica sized handle , note how I eliminated the dreaded choil :)

Slipjoint model (Always reground the backlock to slip), deep carry clip, remove that hump in the front end of the grip(without turning it to an actual deep choil). The FRN worked great but I'd love to see a Ti model that isn't a disgrace to the delica name. Also Micarta scales are always a plus :D steelwise: ZDP, all day every day. Absolutely favorite steel. Maybe move the basemodel from VG-10 to M4 or something :D

Titanium? base model uses M4?... Really? For some reason, I was under the impressed that one of the biggest merits the felicia has, is the high performance for a relatively inexpensive knife. The changes you're talking about take it from being a $70 knife, to being a $200 knife. You'd kill the model entirely... Special runs? sure. Why not. But the base model? hell no. VG10 is great stuff in that price bracket, and FRN is more than up to the task.

Well I said "a titanium model..." and wasn't talking about the new standart model. Just like the Ti Version that already existed Bit with good F&F and a Satin Blade instead of the damascus.
The M4 part was a joke, i thought that was really obvious.

So what my actual base model Delica5 would be:
- removed hump
- deepcarry clip
- slipjoint
- (micarta scales)
As long as there's still a ZDP version I don't care for the base model steel

I think there would be some demand for sprints with blade upgrades, though, and maybe unique colors. I've been a little surprised we see so few Delica/Endura dealer runs.

I agree on the sprints with blade steel variations.
The recent S30V is welcome and three are in my collection.
