delica blade play

The spydie lock backs I've owned either had it out of box or developed it. I don't get why they can't eliminate it like cold steel seems to be able to do.

Cold steels triad lock uses a stop pin, it may look like a back lock but isn't.

I am still waiting for the Cold Emerson Syperco Steel CQC Endura with Tri-Ad Lock and Wave feature...

I'm talking about the older voyagers as well as the newer Triad lock backs. The addition of a stop pin is a bonus feature on an already well designed lock back. I recently sold an original full sized Gunsite that I probably used for things I shouldn't like chopping etc and it was still rock solid when I let it go.

The same thing happened to me. I got it and then three days later it had up and down play. It was very minor, but for being three days old and only using it to cut tape, paper, and paracord I find it completely unexceptable. I contacted Spyderco and I'm going to send it in to spydercos warranty and hopefully they fix it.

A little vertical play (or even horizontal) isn't going to affect normal cutting. It's not as though your hand or wrist is a robotic arm and you're doing surgery!!!

Mine has very slight up and down play (barely noticeable) and I've edc'd it for over a year now. Love this knife!

I was just thinking about Spyderco lockbacks and blade play earlier today, and checked all my Spydies. My Delicas (4 of them) seem to be the best together with a Police G-10, but every other Spyderco lockback I own (and I own quite a few) has some vertical blade play (including some heavy duty knives like the old Manix and Chinook).

It's clear that it doesn't affect function, since I've been using some of these knives for years without any issues, but it does bother me a bit (especially in the more expensive models). I've read some explanations from Sal Glesser saying it's normal, and even desirable since it allows for wear, but I've also read an article in which he says, about the difficulty in making good lockbacks, "Because it is difficult to make, we have worked as recently as the last two years on refining the lock to virtually eliminate play in the blade." (http://www.blademag.com/profiles/blogs/the-lockback-takes-a-lickin-and-keeps-on-lockin) If blade play is normal or a way to allow for future wear, why work so hard on trying to eliminate it?

Anyway, like I said, even with their blade play my Spydies work just fine. I'm a bit hesitant about getting more lockbacks from them, though, and I'm branching out to other brands.

My Delica has zero blade play. i have been using it for almost a year now and still no vertical blade play. if it really bothers you, i would suggest getting in touch with Spyderco's customer service. i'm pretty sure they will make it right for you.

My delica has noticeable lateral blade play, unless I want it to be supper hard to open and close. It has slight vertical play too. Been like that since I got it. My Caly, on the other hand, is very solid.

Sending knives back to Spyderco isn't really an option for me, I'm a few thousand miles aways from Colorado. All the customs paperwork and shipping costs would make it rather pointless.

I'm sure function isn't affected, since I've been using these knives for ages before checking for blade play, but it does bother me a bit.

Just checked my delica4 FFG and it is Rock solid and I have carried it a lot in the last year.

I got a delica with blade play in all directions, I don't know why but it doesn't bother on the delica but on any other knife it annoys the crap out of me

It looks like a mid lock, not a back lock ;)

All four of my Delicas have next to zero blade play.

Lol, so they have play.

Every one of my delicas has play in pretty much all directions. After using them for a while, they just start to develop play. However after years of use, I've never had the lock slip or disengage unintentionally.

Some amount of blade-play should be expected from backlocks. If your knife does not have it: lucky you! I have got a few Enduras and Delicas. Some of them do not have blade-play: but those are the knives I did not use them since I bought them new. So I can not say for sure. The Endura I use regularly for years and the Stretch I EDC for the last 8-12 months both have minimal blade-play. I consider it a part of lock design and have zero concern.

When you guys say up and down blade play, you mean the lock bar shifts up and down or the blade shifts where it contacts the lock bar (i.e, the amount or placement of their contact changes)? All of mine do the former, but none do the latter.

mine has blade play and it has for awhile, although mine has seen hard edc use and is pretty old
