Delica or Endura?

Hey all, I'm going to get my first Spydie (yes, it's rare to see no-one here who hasn't owned ad-least ONE spyderco). Anyway, I'm leaning towards the Endura for a double heavy duty lockback / possible defense. But the Delica looks so cool/cute and has been recommended by some SD experts, mainly because it doesn't turn eyebrows but is VERY effective for all cutting chores. I'm only interested in PE. And I know where I can get them in VG10 for a good deal as well. So help me decide! :)

You really can't go wrong either way. You want a BIG knife go with the Endura. A medium knife, grab up the Delica. All in all they are really the same knife in large and med.

Probably depends on which pocket you intend to carry the knife - I assume clipped.

On closer fitting pants I find the Endura a bit too long for comfortable front pocket pants carry - whereas it rides pretty well in the back/hip pocket.

The Delica is shorter - so suits front pocket carrying better - and even in the back/hip pocket one would probably feel it less when sitting down.

In looser fitting/baggy pants there may be less difference - but then YMMV anyway.

The regular black plastic Endura and Delica (black metal pocket clips) are less noticable - there are also the all stainless steel versions that look attractive.

A worthwhile thing to do is to examine the individual knife you intend to buy (or ask the supplying vendor to do it) I have seen some that have up/down play in the blade - which I find very disturbing as the blade "gives" a tiny bit when cutting - this is a common problem with some lockbacks, and not necessarily unique to the Endura or Delica -
it's just that my earlier Delica (all plactic version) suffers from this and I have never carried it.

I usually wear semi-baggy jeans. I would probably carry the Delica clipped to my Front Right pocket. The Endura would probably also be clipped, but I might carry it in the back pocket (which I do most lockbacks if not in a sheath and I might do that with Delica if I get it).

I had both. Even though I prefer bigger knives than the Delica, I ended up trading the Endura and keeping the Delica. The Delica is also the only lever-lock that I own. In fact, I have three: one in AUS8A, one in ATS-55, and the latest in VG-10.

I've owned both and I would recommend the Delica. I think it's size is better suited for everyday carry and it can do virtually anything that the Endura can.

The Endura is no more "heavy duty", just significantly bigger. The delica is not "cute" either, it is a decent sized knife. If you have held a Delica knockoff, don't use that as a measure - the real thing is bigger.

I'm going to go for a VG10 PE FRN Delica. Thanks everybody. After I get my ASP prehaps I'll get a Spyderco police and end up being like glockman99

RH, I've never handled a Spyderco knockoff.

J-man,

Where's the good deals at??!? I'm from the GTA area as well.

My sister and her boyfriend gave me a SS Serrated Delica, and i use it as my beater, great knife. I'd like a vg-10 PE too.

Also, I lived near Regent Park last school year. I saw people smoking crack outside near my 2nd floor apartment everyday. I carried a 21" casco expandable baton. They're damn good quality too, better price than an ASP. THe casco was $100-120 CDN i'm pretty sure.

Good thing....i never had to bash any crackies.. :)

I like your choices in knives!.:D.
(But make SURE it's a fully-serrated VG-10 Police model.).

Well, its like comparing apples to bigger apples. They are basically the same knife, just choose which one will meet your needs. I find the Endura to be big enough to handle most jobs yet small enough to carry comfortably.

Redstripe_808, send me an e-mail. I can give you a few good places for the VG10 FRN Delica and a 21" ASP.

glockman99, I probably will.

My choice between the Endura and the Delica when I carried that level of Spydies was determined by where I was going. If I was going into Washington, DC, where I work, there is a maximum blade limit of 3" and the Delica fits very nicely, while the law in the jurisdiction where I live, Arlington, VA, allows more than 3". The Endura worked very well out there. Of course, the StarMate works even better! :D

From KnifeLaws Subforum

"DC Knife Blade Limits & Intent to Use Unlawfully

I am wondering about Washington DC's 3 inch blade limit on knives. The relevant law says:

b) No person shall within the District of Columbia possess, with intent to use unlawfully against another , an imitation pistol, or a dagger, dirk, razor, stiletto, or knife with a blade longer than 3 inches, or other dangerous weapon.

I'm wondering what effect the "with intent..." clause has on the legality of just carrying a knife with a 3 & 1/2 inch blade if one keeps it in his pocket. Or does the simple fact you have a blade longer than 3 inches establish the intent itself (much the same way having a controlled substance over a certain amount is deemed to constitute intent to distribute)? Is there any case law on this? Any experiences with Metro Police? Thanks."

I'm no law expert, but with the way everything is going (so called "terrorist threats") in D.C. I doubt there going to take your utility reason seriously. I think a knife over 3" would establish intent all by itself to the judge (after 9/11 anyway).

NGK has the ATS-55 PE FRN Delica for $41.26
Knifeworks.com has the VG10 FRN Delica for $40.99

Which steel is better in your opinon? (I'm going for the VG10 I've heard its better)

First off you can get a better deal for the VG-10! Seconed VG-10 has better corrosion resistance and much better edge holding. It's a "wonder steel" and you can't go wrong with it.

ATS-55, if properly HT'ed is great. 99 was an interesting year, reading all the posts of delica's rusting just looking at them. I was lucky I guess, got a good one. I was cutting Roofing Shingles with it last year, among other things that shouldn't have been cut with a EDC(should have grabbed an xacto, such as electrical cords and 20gauge copper wire). Just a quick touchup at night was all it took.

It was tough enough to take the constant denting and abuse, just steel and go... from a 40 that could shave. I know VG-10 will take and hold a thinner edge(took it to 20inclusive on my c52), but I've also read stories of VG-10 chipping out at 30.

I'd personally take ATS-55. Been beating on my SS Dragonfly since Aug 01, and it's been through a few experiments on the edge.
