delica or salt1?

I have been thinking about a Salt 1 serrated knife for a while now. The pacific salt has done me well, and is the size of an endura. I love it for the H-1 steel! But after handling an Endura 4 a week ago, I noticed how much more rigid it seems with the liners.

Is it just a toss up between the Salt 1 and the Delica? Does anyone think the liners make a big difference? Either way I want it to be fully serrated. Is there a delica out there that has the tip thickness of the Salt 1?

thanks.

I think, your rigidity issue is not as big on the smaller knives.
My personal favorite here is the Delica 3.
Same handle as the Salt but with the sharp tip I found so useful, and the VG-10 steel.
Salt has the strongest tip, next to that is the Delica 4.
It's allways a tradeoff, Strength or sharpness.

Yes the Delica 4 has a reinforced tip, and the SS liners really make no difference since that thing it light! I prefer VG-10 steel to H-1. Delica 4's come in fully serrated edges as they have in the past, i think...but im not 100%

I like the strength that liners provide. When I look for a knife, I want it to have liners.

I prefer the Delica, but I also want a Salt. Rust proof just sounds so awesome :D

I would go with the D4 unless you plan on being around salt water or other corrosive substances.

As for the liners in the D4, the thing is still one of my lightest EDCs.

A few years ago I handled the Delica but without the liners I could not deal with it ... so I got the SS version. I did handle a Delica today with the liners and although I love my SS the new version with the liners is quite nice!

I would not want a Salt, with the compromises in the steel, unless I had to deal with the coastal air.

the salt 1 is lighter and easier to open. i like the salt 1 better. get the fully serrated one, its wicked.

Thats funny that you bring this up. My EDC is a SE salt 1 in yellow, and a Fg d4w. Best combo if you ask me! :D

As far as the liners go, don't worry about it. The Salt is a plenty strong knife. I used it to hack down boxes and some sticker bushes. H1 does get scuffed up easily, but my knives are users! :D

I haven't had a chance to handle the delica 4 as of yet. There is a shop in town, and perhaps I can make it by soon. The H1 in my Pacific is awesome though. It does scratch up easily but that knife goes to the field quite a bit these days. So far it has handled everything I have thrown at it. I even left a bit of orange I had cut up on it after someone told me that leaving it there would rust my knife, laughed a bit. No experience with VG-10 but I read that its a good steel too. Still a toss up, but I'm leaning towards the Salt 1 mostly because of how much my other Salt has impressed me.

Heres a pic I took last night. Sorry for the bad pic, Cell pic + bad lighting :p
BTW The d4w sits front right pocket and the Salt sits left back pocket.

No rust issue if the liners are made of H-1 or titanium :) Cost is another matter entirely and I like the current cost.

I like and will choose the salt. The no-rust advantage is great! Seriously, my kershaw JYDII is rusting (sandvic steel) and I'm always maintaining the surface about once a week! The salt without liners should be fine cause I own CS voyagers and an Emerson Hardwear (i think that's the name, gotta check it out from me drawer). Only problem is when I grip white knuckles it tends to flex inwards but no biggie.

Nice job on the sanding of the clip. I did mine, but I didn't realize how shallow the Spyder stamp was, so it ended up disappearing :grumpy:

I used 2000 grit sandpaper and mirror-polished it :D

I have two D4s and a Salt 1. The Delicas both have more blade play than the pinned Salt 1. Yes I have snugged up the pivot screws. The liners on the Delica are so thin I don't think they add much strength to the knife. The Salt 1 is a great knife. I use mine quite a bit on cardboard boxes. It is serrated and needs sharpened only about once every 3 months. Cosmetically the H1 steel is not pretty. It is dull and scuffs easily but it is a real work horse.

I have the Delica4 and the Salt 1, and the Tasman. I dont leave home with out my tasman and rotate between my D4 and S1. Both of them cut great but the D4 stays sharper longer. Dropped my D4 and blunted the tip. The delica4 feels a tad bit heavier. They are both sweet knives. I usually carry a DMT fine grit sharpener with me. If my S1 was to get dull on me while using it(which it hasn't yet) I would just touch it up and get it razor sharp again. You wont go wrong with either of these. Enjoy whichever you pick.

The hollow saber grind on the Salt I is much better than the Delica 4. The D4 has a flat saber grind and often the back and the front are uneven. Meaning that the front grind comes closer to the hole and the back grind is farther away from the hole. I have found this to be true in pictures I've looked at of others knives as well as 4 Delica 4's that I have owned. The Delica is "fat" in the middle due to the grind and it doesn't go as high up on the blade as the Delica 3. For those reasons alone I would go with a Salt I. Until the grind issue is resolved on the Delica 4's I will not own any.
