Hey folks , just got a used (but still quite 'in shape') Delica on the "bay".

My question is I am trying to determine the gist of it , such as steel type , is there any way to tell round about what year it was made by the markings ?
I can post a pic but the markings are as follows.

Blade left side / SPYDERCO
Blade right side / SEKI - JAPAN
Pocket clip / US AND FOREIGN PATENTS
Left side of handle / Spyderco emblem " CLIPIT" on top and "DELICA" underneath it.

Handle black , assuming FRN or Zytel , full serrate on blade.

Thank you in advance.

Todd

If it doesn't list the type of steel on the blade that helps age it. Is the clip frn or steel...that helps age it as well. Does the lock release have a dent in it (Boye dent)? A picture is worth a thousand questions. :D

sounds like the 1st generation, with the frn clip, and i believe g-2 steel. im sure the experts will chime in with a more definitive answer.

I'm out of AA for my camera so I'll have to rely on words for now. :D

Clip is FRN and no Boye dent.

The earliest catalog that shows steel markings on the FRN Delica is the '93, and that shows it marked G-2. I would tend to believe an unmarked Delica would be the same, since the earliest marked knives were generally the same steel as the unmarked version of the same model and most models of that era used either GIN-1 (which Spyderco originally called G-2) or AUS-8. The lack of steel markings would also put the knife somewhere before '93 on the timeline. Believe that steel marking began to be used in '92, but not all models received them immediately.

These are the little details that make Spyderco collecting either fun, or ulcer provoking, depending on how fastidious you are. :D

Thanks a lot for the replies folks. This knife was a bargain at $13 but had some blemishes , the tip looked as if it had been used to punch a paint can a few times , so that had to be fixed and some scratches on the blade , the serrate is kinda worn too but after some TLC she sprang right back to life. Lockup is nice and 'clicky' , no blade play in any direction....

I will post some pics tonight.

Todd
