Guys,

do you really need a demagnetizer if you use a surface grinder with magnetic chuck? Demagnetizers seems to run for about $30 on eBay. Is there anything I specific I need to know about them before choosing one?

Thanks,
Alex

A demagnetizer is a very useful tool if you make folders. A megnetized blade will attract all the swarf (bits of steel that are all around your shop) and can wreak havoc with your efforts to keep your knives clean.

Also, if you hand finish your blades, a demagnetizer will, again, help keep grit off your blade.

I bought one of the plug in types with an on/off switch. Works great, but, I didn't get mine from EBAY.

i got mine from a thrift store for a buck. it was made to erase audio recording reels.

When my blades get magnetized, I put them in the forge and take them up in temperature to "non-magnetic". ;)

I use a demager on anything that comes off the surface grinder. When you take anything off run it over the demag and it solves problems further down the line.
