Denim Micarta

The color ranges so much. And to that point I think that's one of the factors that makes it nice.

But it really goes from darker versions like this

To lighter (or more) with "fraying" like this

I prefer the lighter denim with white parts and the "fraying".

Wondering ways to achieve this?

kaput kaput The color difference is nothing more than mineral or oils from the hand than not. All micarta IME does that - even my CRK micarta.

kaput kaput denim is made a little differently than other fabrics. The warp is dark blue and the filling is white, and it's woven as a twill rather than a plain weave. The differences you are seeing are the various layers of the fabric being exposed. Notice the very dark on the lower knife, that's the upper layer of the denim. Deep indigo dyed looks like that, just as stonewashed denim has a lighter appearance (some of the indigo dye has been washed away). As you sand away the denim layer you may expose a lighter color. The micarta could have been made from different types of denim, dark indigo, overdye, or stonewashed.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Very unique handle material with its nuances, eh.

The example I mentioned is not a user, yet. So I was inquiring the possibilities. I aleady have a denim user and it does not lighten with use like mentioned. It actually gets darker from dirt and hand oils, which is fine. Rather, I was specifically wondering about my non user and simply returning it back to the way it was prior to oiling. I think the examples of doing so mentioned are good ones, specifically the rubbing alcohol and dish soap.

HST HST thanks for the examples. That is exactly the example I am referencing. (I wish I could upload pics straight to the site here without having to host elsewhere)
