Dental Surgery by Spyderco

I just can't imagine the days of dentistry without anesthetics! That's hardcore to do by yourself!

I'm fairly sure i would've been dead at age 18 if i lived in that time.

My teeth are really bad but also hypersensative, i need 3x the normal dose of anesthetics for any dental work. If i lived in a time where we didn't have those i think i would've died from the root canal infection i got at age 18.

Uhhh....Not sure what that has to do with knives. o_O

For that task, I think I would have preferred a Spyderco with a more acute point than the Native. Maybe something more like the Police. Probably the original with the sabre grind.

I don't know of any KNIFE that would be good for this procedure . Maybe a small wood gouge chisel ?

His available options were a Gerber Gator, Ka-bar, OKC SP-9 or Spyderco Native. Under the circs it was the lesser evil.

Why do you think it was the best choice of those knives?
With one hand he was pulling back the side of his mouth, to expose the lateral surface of the gum. With the other hand he sliced into the gum, as described in the text. A surgeon would use a scalpel. Of those knives, the Native has the best profile. Me? I’d visit a dentist. ;)

Good point. He did push cut into the medium using the edge rather than "poke" with the point.

One wonders if something with "belly" or a straight edge like a Delica Wharncliffe or Kiwi would be more useful for the task.

Yes, a Native wouldn’t be my first choice if given more options.

Incidentally, the author of ‘The Log Cabin’ has an upcoming book on knives: ‘The Edgemaster’s Handbook’. He spent years reviewing gear for various publications, and is by his own admission very outspoken. I’ll offer up a review when I get my hands on it, but I have a feeling it may be somewhat controversial (the book, not the review!)

Eh, yes and no. While barbers frequently doubled as dentists...cocaine, morphine, narcotics weren’t regulated and easily acquired for whatever ailed ya. It was common to find elixirs that contained cocaine, morphine, and high proof alcohol.

John Adam's daughter had a mastectomy without anesthesia. He wrote that she handled it like a champ, though she later succumbed to the disease.

Come to think of it, no one had anesthesia before the invention of anesthesia.

I've had to have more dental work than I care to admit... I think $2700 the last time. Or maybe that was the time before. 2 crowns and 3 fillings. I hate going, but I like keeping my teeth. If I would have taken better care of my teeth and gone to yearly checkups it wouldn't have happened but here we are!

Self surgery? Well I broke a tooth, and that was so painful I could probably do it. After having the rest of the tooth extracted and the anesthesia wore off I was in absolutely no pain. So a little more on top of what I experienced wouldn't have phased me.

Now linemans pliers... I think he should have chosen something with smaller jaws. Needlenose would have fit in the space better...
