Dental Survival...

Orajel, works to a point. Oil of clove, works to a point. I have tried them both and they can be very helpful for minor tooth pain. Haven't tried yarrow though I have heard about it. If you develop an abscess the only thing that will help is serious painkillers and more importantly antibiotics. I had an abscess for my sons graduation last year. Some of the most miserable days I had ever spent. Eventual root canal. Prevention is the best but it can happen and I suspect that antibiotics would be most important. If you are out in the bush, if you can rest, Ibuprofen will probably suffice until the antibiotics kick in. In addition to the ibuprofen I carry dent-temp which I have also used. It is a remarkably small bottle and very effective for cavities and caps. My old doc (member of WMS) use to set me up with a supply of antibiotics in case I got an infection out in the bush. I use to give them back when they expired and he would supply me with more. New doc so I haven’t asked yet if he will do the same.

I'm with Bear Paw on this one. I was stuck with a tooth that split in half for 3 days when I was a teenager. Must've eaten enough aspirin to to rot most folks guts away trying to live through the pain. Since that time I keep an emergency dental kit around and in my kit.

Helps as well to pick up a copy of the book "Where there is no Dentist"

Make sure to keep orajel in the kit as well.

The emergency dental kits contain clove oil which you put in the cavity and a temporary filling material which seals the tooth. Properly used they work rather well.

How about just having a check up and regular cleaning twice a year. It's easier to catch and fix small things before they become serious problems.
You can buy temporary filling material from the drugstore for a lost filling or cracked tooth that has medication in it to "calm" a tooth down. Some floss wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I do the twice a year thing and I can tell you that it doesn't always work. About 2 years ago I had a tooth crack between the twice a year cleanings. I had to wait for 2 weeks to get an appointment with the oral surgeon. Some of the worst pain I have ever endured! Ibuprofen wouldn't touch it.

Goody powder rubbed around the tooth might also help. Just an alternative to chewing up acetomenephine (sp?).

Pine resin heated and mixed with white wood ash makes a hard epoxy strong material. It would probably make a good hard filling material.

I wouldn't advise rubbing goody's powder around a tooth. That may cause a chemical burn. It's meant for ingesting, not for topical use.

THis is a very timely post, I just a had tooth pulled last week , I had a cavity that was filled when I was a kid and the dentist didn't get all of it and about six months ago it finally busted. well it was not to bad until the roots got infected and I had to do a full run anti-biotics and then have it pulled because he couldn't pull it while infected because the root didn't take to the freezing, this I found out the hard way,(started to work on the tooth as if it was frozen). MY dentist referred to as one of the tougest extraction he has ever hard to do, I quote "now I know what pulling a tooth on a bear must be like ha ha ha" BUt this is what brings me to my question / point, It seem that the infection is back , what to do about that? I am making an appointment tomorrow and will hopefuuly get some more anti biotics and a few more perks but if you were in the bush how would you treat the infection, I have the sore tooth gone but am far from pain free right now.

P.S I really never want to have to pull a toth with out all the modern pain killers and frezzing.......:(

One of my Sar instructors raved about clove oil as a dental pain reliever. It is sold over the counter. I have no experience with it but have read good things as well.

I carry a tiny bottle in my first aid kit. I haven't used it yet – just going on what I hear (and the old Dustin Hoffman movie, Marathon Man). I've heard it's scent is very interesting to animals so you want to be sure not to spill a drop.

I don't that is a good idea since you have not cleaned or sterilized the cavity or abscess. This can let the cavity completely eat-away the tooth from the inside, or force an infection into the roots and into your jaw bone.

J. Wade you might have a dry socket, when the clot that's supposed to form in the space that was occupied by the tooth comes out from smoking , using a straw or spitting too strongly right after the extraction. Hurts like a mother and your dentist needs to "dress" it. Probably a few times. I'd see him/her asap!!

Thanks for the tip about the book, "Where there is no Dentist". I'll definitely check that out.

I know that silver has antibiotic properties, but there is a danger of literally turning blue. I can't remember what it is called, but it has happened to a few people who ingest colloidal silver. Honey has antibiotic properties.

I've been very fortunate not to ever have had an abscess. My father had a problem with them and I know they were very painful. Jimi, I would definitely get in touch with your dentist. Abscess or dry socket, both are painful and an abscess definitely needs to be taken care of.

Studying history, the Romans practiced some very advanced dentistry for their time. They also had remarkable physicians. I wonder if we might find some answers there?

Excellent. I'm especially interested in the effects of the protracted use / overdose of Eugenol in relation to tachycardia, squitters, nausea, convulsions .etc.
