Is it common to have bolster denting from where the jigging meets the metal?

This is a rather un-specific question.....
It might be normal on gas station knives, but not on $1500 customs.
Why don't you give us more details, or a picture?

I still like the knife and will keep it but I thought GEC did a little more inspections and this would not have left as a “first”. Maybe a store knife. I have other GEC’s with jigging and they normally stop the jigging before it gets too close to the edge. Idk. Maybe I’m being picky

I'm thinking those are buffing marks from the buffing wheel going deeper into the grooves in the handle scale resulting in more wheel and more buffing compound hitting the bolster in those spots.

I assume they jig the handle scales before the knife is assembled.

I think they do that on purpose. Or the sharp edges from the bolsters would catch when you rubbed over them.

I personally don’t like when the jigging (or even the bark from stag) extends to the bolsters. The slabs should be hafted smooth at the bolsters. But if the jigging or veins go up to the bolster the bolsters need to be blended into the veins like on your knife.

It looks like crap and it’s really unnecessary. I’ve had plenty of GEC knives like this and the “denting” is always quite shallow, basically just enough to make it show. There’s plenty of handmade knives with jigging all the way “into” the bolster like that and I’ve never heard or read a complaint that it has a sharp edge. None of mine are either.

On a Tony Bose knife its an elegant feature.

I would like to see pics of a knife Tony dented the bolsters on. Not sure I ever have. None of mine had it, nor Reese’s knives I own.

This bolster to stag transition is pretty extreme compared to a lot of knives and this ain’t sharp on that edge one bit so with GEC’s shallow jigging, it’s unnecessary to do it.

Just different styles. Neither way is right or wrong, but it is not a flaw. It’s done intentionally.

Intentional or not, I never liked it. I noticed it on every one of my jigged bone GECs so it may be intentional.
How many have you noticed it on? Do the indentations on the bolster and the scales line up in all of them? That’s pretty clear evidence that this is not only intentional but a common practice/production decision they made. I kinda like it, but if you don’t then you should probably avoid jigged handles from GEC…

Must be intentional, it was on every one I ever had. Doesn’t mean I have to be a fan of it? Doesn’t bother me either way. Lots of knives out there.

Here's a crazy thought- Has anyone considered calling GEC and asking? They have a phone number listed on their website.

I don't own any of their fine products (never could find the one I liked), so I'm not inclined to call and ask.
