Dependable knives and survival?

Yeah, its alot of fun! I can see all of your points. I like the Syperco Native because of the rivot but some others dont. I agree that even the pinned ones will get loose over time. Ive never had a Benchmade knife before so I dont know about those. I here good things about them. I think Im gonna carry one of my SAKs and maybe my Izula and I should be ok. Heck my Grandfather carried a Barlow knife all of his life and I have it now and its still solid. No blade play at all. Now if Victorinox would put pocket clips on there OHT, then I would be happy. I love my SAKs.

Whether you keep on buying folders or not is up to you, but here's my 2 cents:

-In an urban situation, such as I live in (there's nothing NOT urban in this country), a fixed blade might not be a good carry. Sure, a Battle Mistress and a paring knife and a good folder is a great ready-for-anything combo, but where I live, it's more trouble than good.

-Most tactical folders are overbuilt for light slicing tasks, and under-built for FB work. However there are some that ARE strong enough to do the work of a FB, in an emergency. Striders come to mind.

-Again depending on your situation, your "emergency backup" will differ. In the great outdoors, a strong, reliable fixed blade will definitely rank above a folder. However, in town, it may be better to carry a discreet, yet easily accessible folder for emergencies(ranging from SD situations to seatbelt cutting).

-Loctite is your friend:D Pinned knives will still get loose all the same, it just takes longer. And after that, you can't fix them.

I had a few Barlows when I was a kid, wore them out. :D

I still have a very old SAK that I have in my tool box.

Folders are nice EDC blades, but I don't have much use for them when in the field.

I went 4 years in the USMC and only took a folder into the field once (I was hating life too), and that was because I didn't have a choice. My fixed blades handled everything I needed in a knife and more, usually carried a K-Bar.

I can understand that you'd want gear that you can trust, but wobbling folders isn't an issue in a survival situation. The worst that could happen in that regard is that you'd have only the blade of the folder — no problem! Just wind it up with some cloth or string and you've got a new handle. So, worrying about wobbling folders is a luxury concern (comfort issue) and will not impair your chances of survival.

If you want a really good knife in your BOB, then just get a simple Mora for 5 Bux. Hey — buy a bunch and just stash them in all sorts of places, like your car, your house, your office etc. Any place where you usually are and could get into a survival situation. Keep a small fixed blade like a neck knife on you and you'll be set!
