Deployment knife

Swiss Army Knife and/or a multitool. A fixed blade will probably never leave its sheath. If you insist on a fixed blade look at the SRK.

Let's face it ---- all the fancy expensive knives in the latest and greatest super steels just aren't that practical in use while deployed. And that says much if you truly consider it.

Well I planned on just taking an esee, Sak, and a leatherman

That would be a great combo. An Esee 3/4 would work fine.
Back in the day we had to follow load plans and sop's. It is probably different now.

I'm retired military. I just had a camo PM2 blade engraved to commemorate my last deployment. I carried a Buck odyssey on one deployment. If I were to go again I'd bring a Gayle Bradley 1 or a Manix 2.

Get a Buck clone...

Cpl. Samuel Toloza said a prayer, whipped out his knife and charged the Iraqi gunmen.

Outstanding example of how the latest and greatest is not needed. This guy used a Pakistani Buck clone well. I imagine they are cheap and plentiful in the sandbox, and you won't cry when it grows legs and walks off while you're in the shower.

SOG or Leatherman multitool and any quality EDC folder on the body; eg; delica, ZT, BM. If there is a chest rig/plate carrier/survival vest involved, a quality 4-5" fixed blade attached; eg; ESEE, Bark River Bravo, Tops BOB, .

Carried an ESEE 3 and then a Survive! 3.5 on my kit for a while. Tried a SOCP dagger, but couldn't draw it well under stress in training, so it never got carried for real.

If you don't want a knife on your kit then, like others, I would recommend a spyderco folder with a wave. Great for opening MREs, you can use the wave also if you need to open it quickly.

I also think your idea to take an ESEE, SAK and leatherman sounds like a sound plan. If you are planning to wear civies often then you can wear the ESEE IWB on the weak side if you're carrying a pistol or strong side if not.

But I'm sure you will be fine with any of the recommendations from this thread, though. Thank you for your service and travel safely.

Unless your job in the military creates a need for a fixed blade, I don't recommend bringing one with the intent of it being your primary knife. Talk to others in your career field. Ask them what cutting tasks they typically encountered when they were deployed, and then make your decision accordingly. If you learn that you don't need a fixed blade, but your heart is still set on bringing one, then you might want to consider a small EDC like a Bradford Guardian 3.

On deployment, my main knife was a Spyderco Paramilitary 2. I selected it on the basis of its price, size, utility and reliability. I also selected it because of how easy it is to maintain in the field. In my opinion, it is easy to clean, sharpen and disassemble. The last thing I wanted was for a spring or ball bearing to get damaged or lost while located on the opposite side of the globe. A Paramilitary 2 is not immune to the possibility of damaged or lost parts; however, I feel that the relative simplicity of its mechanism minimizes the need for concern.

There are a lot of knives that would work great on a deployment. The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 just happens to be one of my personal preferences. Again, I recommend that you determine what cutting tasks the knife is realistically going to be called on to perform, and then make your decision accordingly. Avoid the "what if" scenarios, otherwise you're liable to bring a knife that isn't useful to you on a daily basis. Also avoid selecting a knife solely because it "speaks to you." As a knife enthusiast, there are times when I buy a knife merely because I want it. Deployment is NOT one of those times. When I deploy, my decisions regarding equipment are intensely practical.

Also, as others have said, a multi-tool is a good idea too. I always bring one, but I prefer to carry a folding knife as my primary cutting tool.

The two I used the most were my Cold Steel Voyager 3” clip point plain edge and my SwissTool. I carried a few others but those saw the most work and came in under $100.00 for both.

Wait, Pakistanti cutlers have developed self propelled knives!? Think of all the pocket room we could save, i could just walk my knives like a pack of dogs!

Unless times have changed very very greatly, anything in an army barracks can grow legs and disappear.

New people transferring in, old people transferring out, people you don't really know that well, all coming and going. Sometimes they go with other peoples stuff in their duffle bag.

I second the waved endure or even the waved matriarch 2. Plus you can add a wise men company sognet ring and turn it into a kerambit style knife
