Deployment Orders and a Few Questions...

The 3 dollar Smith's arkansas stone is my primary sharpening tool, it does a great job for the money. Small, compact, effective on blades up to about RC59. That with some wet and dry sandpaper and he should be golden.

Im currently in Iraq and my best advice is to just ask what they want. If he is in anywhere in central or southern Iraq I can guarantee he is on big FOB with a good PX and DEFAC. My company just closed down the last of the smaller FOBs in Anbar province which borders Syria/Jordan. Im not sure on the situation north of here but with the political climate currently chances are he is on a decent FOB has access to 99% of the daily living things he needs for personnel hygiene ect. Ask what they are wanting. I can promise you that they are also receiving huge boxes of single serving hygiene items, crappy snacks, ect from groups that send them out from collections. Personally my fiance and family have kept me well supplied with double stuff Oreos which for someone reason are my personal little link to home. Everyone has something a bit different that they want so the best bet is to just ask.

I talked to my sister-in-law to see what she thought and she is going to ask him what he needs without him realizing she'll pass the list on to family. If he knows that we are putting together stuff for him he will go out and buy it himself so we don't spend money on him, just how he's always been...

Anyway I think we have a really good list together right now that should help him out. I know that the knifes they were issued in his first tour were dull and cheap, he broke a fair few, which is why I'd like to send him with a decent knife/sharpener. The HDD is a great idea, we'll pick up a 1TB external and pass it around so everybody can put their movies/tv shows on there.

Anyway, I am really thankful for all the suggestions and generous offers from you guys, having never served in the military I just really didn't know what we could send to help him out.

a 1GB flashdrive is not going to hold very much media, more so if you are gonna put movies on there. it might hold one movie depending on how long it is.

I was going to ask on LightFighter, but hey since you are there, do you know if there is a service or pen pal thing in place? Was thinking maybe some guys or girls over there, who may not be in reg contact or have close friends or family they can write to, want a pen pal. I have alot of friends who thought it would be a good idea into sending packages, and pen pal notes, maybe make a few friends over there.

Any tips?

Wow. I meant a 1TB HDD, not a 1GB... :D

Seagate. Period. Trust me on this-seagate guarantees their hard drives against shock abuse up to 300G's, which is substantial. Anyone that has ever gently nudged a hard drive the wrong way will tell you in general, they are fragile-if that disk rocks hard enough inside the casing it will dent the surface and completely ruin the drive. Seagate uses a shock absorption system so the disk won't come in contact with anything if it is dropped. I accidentally tested it by dropping my hard drive from about shoulder height onto 150 year old oak floor-the hard drive bounced twice. I ran a diagnostic on it and it actually lost 1 milisecond of latency, lol... whatever the price difference is it's worth it. Load it up with all the videos you have-tv seasons, anything. Raid your neighbors' collections as well. Boredom is the number 1 killer in the desert (that and blackhawk mechanical failure ::jerkit::) and I can guarantee you those guys will watch Gilmore Girls forward and back three times over if you put it on there.

Q-tips and cleaning supplies for cleanning his weapons.

Also if he is isued a M9 I would suggest getting a few Berreta factory mags, they are more reliable than isued mags.

I sent the Izula out on Tuesday. Hope it works for him while he's deployed. It's a nice little knife and I think he'll make good use of it.
