Derringer in survival kit

My backpack gun is the S&W 360 SC "kit gun", .357 Mag with 3+" barrel, and only weights 12 oz. I'll take that over a derringer any day!!!

I am more concerned with bear/cat protection and nasty 2-legged critters, than I am with taking small game.

The smallest .22 I'd carry in a PSK is a Ruger 22/45 short barrel.

I know HD has a 4in barrelled one he used to carry hiking. Dunno if he still does.

I had a Freedom Arms (same thing) 1 inch .22lr I would stash when motorcycle camping. First round was snake shot, rest were lr. But it was just a tent gun. I didn't want to wake up some night in the tent and find someone entering without being able to give a suitable greeting. Something in the face, perhaps.

Never a problem. Stopped carrying it. Sold it on Auction Arms, IRC.

Worked. Never pretended to be more than it was. My rationale was that it would alert folks that all actions have consequences, and perhaps, cause them to reevaluate their choices.

I will most likely leave it out of the kit and put it up. I have an NAA. It has a 4" barrel and target sights on it. Works well for rabbits and squirrels. The compactness is nice. Like the idea of shotshells for snakes though.

With a four inch barrel and sights, it's not really what I think of as a Derringer. I guess it could be somewhat useful....

I often carry a Kimber/Daewoo DP-52, which is a Walther PPK sort of thing in .22LR, with a four inch tube. It's a handy pistol and much more compact than my Ruger 22/45, plus it offers double-action.

Stay sharp,
