I routinely carry two knives. One is a mid-size SUK (sport utility knife, aka 'tactical' folder). The other is a 'sheeple' knife, for use when potentially squeamish folks are present. Normally mine is a William Henry model.

Three examples of great sheeple folders: a) RJ Martin's recent 'Zing', a flipper folder with orange handles and 'striated' blade; These folders look like they could be some exotic woodshop tool, or maybe something intended for use by an EMT. b) the SOG Rainbow Twitch or Kershaw Rainbow Chive. c) Virtually anything by William Henry Knives.

What is your perfect sheeple folder? It can be a knife that is real or imagined. To me, the goal would be to have a knife that is very functional, but doesn't evoke fear. Generally speaking, there is a trade-off: more function=more fear. Perhaps some genius out there can think of a knife that circumvents the trade-off.

the one I have now :D

I'd never not carry a knife for who it might "offend".
Funny you mention the Zing. I have one with a wharny blade and it's one of the best SD knives I own. If you flipped it open in front of most people I'd bet they would think it was a switchblade.
My regular EDC is a small Sebenza and I use it all the time in public. I've used it to cut a tag off a piece of clothing at the cash of a hippie camping store (MEC for those in Canada) and the girl didn't blink. So, I guess the Seb is sheeple friendly, but that's not why I carry it.

I think my red SAK Ranger is about as un-threatening as any knife, and it's very functional

I think multi-tools tend to be less scary than hefty single-blade folders, which seems rational, because a typical SAK really wouldn't make a very effective weapon.

Use whatever works for you and doesn't upset the locals ;)

What could possibly be less threatening than this?

Still very usefull too. If anyone asks why you have it just say "I used to be a Scout"

A two inch long orange coated blade, with a perfectly round tip. Also on the blue polkadotted pink scales, a giant happy face.

But seriously, if you pull out your knife with cool assertiveness, as if you were pulling any other random harmless thing out of your pocket, most people won't care. Those who do are not particularly worth your trying to please.

my perfect sheeple knife is the one "they" probably need to use because "they" don't carry one. SO ,"they" get to look, not touch.:D

These sheeple threads are silly. Honestly, how many times does your knife make people shriek and run away? Are you carrying legally? Who cares?

I carry two knives every day. A Benchmade 710 and a Vic Soldier. The 710 cuts what needs to be cut, regardless of who's around. The Soldier is for food or when the need for a screwdriver arises.

Sheeple aren't a problem if you're not whipping your knives out just for the hell of it. If you're being reckless, even an SAK is going to scare people (and rightfully so) but that doesn't make them sheeple.

Just use your knives and be smart about it and it'll all be ok.

Nail on the head.

As a Chinese, I didn't know that carrying a knife would scare anyone in such a country like America where people is allowed to possess guns. Compared to guns, I think knives are completely harmless. :D

You'd be suprised at how many dipsh... Crap I almost gave a W&C answer.:D You'd be suprised at how many easily frightened people live in America. I think America is better than most countries in that regard, though.

As for the original question, I don't care what the sheeple think of the knives I carry, and I sure as heck aren't going to not carry a certain knife because it'll scare them. The sheath knife that I carry everyday is a 4.25" bladed Western Hunter, and most people don't mind when I use it to cut something in front of them. I guess because it looks "folksy." I do carry a Reminton Peanut as well, but it sure as heck isn't because of sheeple. There are some things that a smaller knife does best, or a larger knife isn't neccesary for. My $0.02:foot:

I don't give any thought to sheeple when picking a knife to carry...my intended uses and whether or not it's legal in my current location are all that matter to me. The potential fear of others is not an issue...

If I wanted to carry a cute knive, the Kershaw Chive would be my choice, but it would be somewhat limited as a real user...I do have one in my collection, however. :D

Ray :)

Classic and yet so true. My trekker has me pegged as a terrorist at work and I'm mexican. The farmer unfortunately doesn't help. There are too many frightened and uneducated people in this country and sadly my tools and chosen profession are not complimentary.....

My perfect sheeple knife, which shouldn't scare anyone, would be my pink Spyderco Jester. If one day somebody asks me to put this little fellow away I'll have to admit that there are definitely sheeple out there. May this day never come...
