Desert Ergos or custom from elsewhere?

I have built up a bit of money in my knife fund,($800-1000) and am confused as to what to do with it.

My question is this, should I go for the nice custom folder/fixed blade, or go for that awesome offer Busse had through Tuesday? Just how special is that offer?

I have two days to decide, and any honest advice is welcome.

Frodo

PS Right now I am set for user folders and only have a Buck and Benchmade Outbounder for fixed. I guess the big draw for the Busse is it fills an area I need. But I may not have a large chunk of change again for a while, and would like a nice custom at some point.

PPS If I get that Tali-Whacker from Raden I will have a decent sized Busse, but probably wouldn't use it anyway. :D

If I was you, I'd get one of the ERGOs, than save the rest of my money and wait for the Busse folder. I don't know what "custom" makers you're pondering, but I like Busse best.

It sounds as though you're looking for a user or two. What size blade are you looking for and what are your intended uses? If you can answer that we may be able to be of more help...

I went with the trio, but on the down side it's kinda hard to beat up on a serial# knife. Why not go for the combo and save $80? The desert coating is really tough. At least it is on my infi coot. Been beating the snot out of it and can't see a scratch yet.

Yeah, the intended use would help in the decision. What'cha got in mind for it?

If it was me, and I had that much to spend then I would definitely go with the 3 busse desert coated deal. I am getting a Battle Mistress and even though it’s going to have a serial# it will probably be a user, because it will be the only BM I have(poor me):( ;) Or you could get that taliwhacker from Raden, and a desert ergo of you choice and still have some left over to put toward a custom in the future. Whatever you choose, you’re in a great position to get some great steel!

There are other knives besides Busses? pfft!

Get the trio or stash it away a bit longer for the new line to replace the Ergos

Alpha,

You gettin a trio? If not I don't think the other knives are numbered. I also ordered an NO with the same color+the trio and I don't think the extra NO is going to be numbered. Will be a user tho.

The ergos are nice, but anytime a "fund" is created that stands for long hard work and sacrifices over time. My personal recommendation would be to find a single custom knife that really strikes your interest. Gotta remember these ergos are desert runs, but they are still ergos and thus not on the same playing field as customs.

If I had that fund waiting for a knife purchase thats what I would do, I'm much more focused on individual knives rather than series now....BUT however you decide to spend the money let us know. There is NO SUCH THING as a bad knife purchase ;) :)

Well Poop:grumpy: I thought that they were all numbered:o I guess that takes the struggle out of to use or not to use. To answer your question wetdog1911, I only ordered a single Battle Mistress. Oh well, I'll be glad to get it anyway.:D :D

You tell 'em Hunter!:p Maybe the Grinder man will see this and enlighten us all (he already enlightened my wallet:eek: :D )

Thanks for all your comments, its given me more to think about.

I guess the main question was what I would use it for. I wouldn't be carrying it every day, I've got folders for that and am to "urban" for that. I will be moving to the country next year, so I will need an "outdoor" knife, but I don't know that I would use these Busse for that purpose. By that time I will have the $ to buy a user Busse. I guess these would be safe knives unless called to duty by special circumstance.

I just hate the fact that I don't have a large knife right now, even though I have no specific use for them yet. It just seems natural to me to have a well rounded knife collection, with the thought that any of my collection could some day be users. I know these would make good users, no question about it, but if I don't use them are they collection caliber? They won't loose value will they?

I guess my challenge would be this. What single custom knife maker, that is actually taking orders at this time, can make me a knife that will beat these three desert ergos for the same price? That isn't a retorical question, so if you have an idea, please email me if you don't want to post it on THIS forum. ;) :D

I WANT these knives, I just can't get these knives AND a custom. Choices, Choices... (Not that I'm complaining :) )

Frodo

PS Just thought of this, I could get a custom Busse. :D

FTH,

If you use these knives, they will rise in value. If you keep them in pristine shape they will really be worth some cash in the future.

You can't go wrong with a Busse.

I know it's tough to pick ONE Busse model, but you could pick one or even two and have money left over for some customs.
If you like Damascus bowies and hunters, you can get the Busse trio and a Stek damascus for a little over a grand.

What custom knife maker can make a knife that will "beat" a Busse?

Well, if you're talking about sheer performance, none. period. I don't think there is one single custom maker out there who could make you a knife that would perform as well as a Busse (gotta love INFI)... that is, when you are in need of a knife to really heap some punishment on. Busses are not the best cutters (they're pretty thick) and although I love their rugged looks, some people actually prefer more finely finished knives. The great thing about them is that my Busses cut, hack, chop and hold an edge so long you just wouldn't believe it unless you've seen it. I have taken my Steel Heart and TRIED to make it dull just by chopping wood... nope, didn't work! I was worn out in a couple hours and the knife was still shaving sharp. You really just have to try one out to believe it.

So, I guess if you are looking for a knife you can absolutely depend on to do anything and everything, never break, and practically beg for abuse - get a Busse.

Ok you may be right and all the knives will be numbered. At the first quick read I thought just the trio sets would be numbered. After a re-read Jerry just said the knives would be numbered. Perhaps the trio would all have the same number. The extra NO I ordered was before this offer,so who knows about the number? I did get the snakeskin slabs tho. It's gonna be a user regardless.
A custom maker taking orders now for what, $797? That can match a Busse? None that I can think of. And for 3 knives to boot?

Just get 1 in the size you want. They are the same price as the regular CG knives. Then take the money left over and put a down payment on a custom of you choice and begin a several year wait for your dream knife. Or contact Marc and get a Busse custom. I think (??) it's around $100/inch or so. Also a several year wait. Maybe less. Who knows?

I agree AntDog, nothing will probably "beat" a Busse for performance at the task it is designed for, but I probably won't abuse, or even use, what I get, so I am thinking of "beat" in the overall sense of the word. What custom would any of you trade these three busse to get. But I know you are not the folks to be asking that question of.:D

What I need to do is post that question on the custom board, which is what I might do. Right now I am leaning toward the three Busse, because I would like one of each eventually, and would love a matched set. I also like the desert look. But if I could order a custom from someone like Blackwood, I would probably prefer that. It's just that I don't know enough about the custom makers that are actually taking orders. A large Busse custom would cost well over the cost of these three, and I'm not certain of the "perfect" design I want, so why not get a tried and true design in the ergos.

It helps to think "out loud" so to speak, and I don't expect someone to solve this question for me. :) But thanks for all your input.

Frodo

Another option may be a Busse variant. Some custom features on a stock platform... Food for thought.

FTH

Thats easy. Get the trio. Take the leftover money send it to Blackwood to secure a place in line and you will have the rest of the money waaay before the knife is finished. Plus you will have instant collection.:D :D
