Thanks guys, wish i could figure out a way to work more Ironwood without feeling the effect for 2 weeks.

This knife was in D2, Anthony yours is forged 5160 but very very similar but with a little more belly, Danbo, yours will be 3V and longer.

On the topic of Ironwood i use a respirator but even the slightest amount of dust makes me sick for days. So yall make sure and mask up when working it ;-)

Yowsa! I have five sets of Grade A Desert Ironwood slabs just waiting for that special knife (or special customer).

Beautiful knife, Matt. Very nice. I'm curious about how you finished the Ironwood. It seldom makes it on the knife looking as good as it did in the slabs. Obviously you've achieved that.

Also, are you forging the 3V?

Thanks again guys, really appreciate the feed back.

Jerry, i just take it to 400 grit, then rub it with 0000 steel wool. After i get it glassy smooth, i rub it down with a acetone soaked rag to get the residue off. Then apply a coat of "fixit", let dry buff off.

It takes a while to buff the fixit off, but rub it down with the 0000 steel wool soaked in Birchwood Casey stock wax toward the end and it helps remove the remaining fixit and buffing compound.

After all compound and fixit is gone, i rub it down with a soft cloth and stock wax.

Sounds much more involved than it actually is.

On the 3V ive tinkered with forging some, and it moves ok under the hammer. Problem is figuring out the annealing process.

Nice woodwork, not to mention the steel...

Any of you guys ever tried Watco Danish Oil Finish on Ironwood? Should work just fine!

Very nice Matt. Really to bad that the ironwood messes with you. It is one of my favorite woods. I think I would like my Camp Bowie in the ironwood instead of the curly maple. NOT!

Matt, get or upgrade your resperator. Your health is a serious issue. Many woods are toxic when being worked. You need better ventilation and a better filter for your breathing mask!

There's also the issue of skin contact which allows toxins to enter through the pores. Unless your shop is pretty far removed from where you live, it's hard to get away from the dust entirely.

Beautiful knife. I agree, ventilation and a good dust collection system are important. Skin contact with wood dust is especially a problem with any of the very dense woods.

Great work as usual Matt. The other new pics on your site look good as well. I can't decide which is my favorite.

I use a respirator, but every now and then i get in a rush and dont think. I just do something real quick and forget to put it on, and thats what happened this time with the ironwood. I may have went without my respirator for a few minutes max, when i realized that fact it was too late and i was sick for days. It actually gave me a serios chest cold. Maybe my system was already down and this initiated the illness, im not sure.

Since then if im in the shop doing any thing that cuases dust i wear it, even if for a "quickie".

Thanks all.

Matt.
