I'm heading to Death Valley to do a bit of sightseeing, and decided that it was high time to make myself a little knife, so this is my desert knife.

The 4" long blade is .150" thick Crucible CPM-4v, antiqued and scuzzy looking, with a thin copper bolster that has been hammered and blackened to match the aesthetic of the blade, mated to an African Ebony spacer and a beautifully figured Claro walnut handle. The coffin shape tapers forward, and swells at the butt. I polished the edge of the bolster to add some bright tones to the piece, and chose a copper pin to complement it.

Thanks for looking!

That is very nice.

Since you will be going to the lowest spot in the USA at 101 degrees with 11% humidity, this time of year, lets hope your wood survives :)

Retired Mastersmith Robbin Hudson made octagonal handles almost exclusively. He said it was just the right shape for a handle with not too sharp edges and yet sharp enough for a great grip.

Having that swell increases grip, too. A fine knife!

Good thread.

Thanks, everyone. This style of ‘antiquing’ is very different for me, and oddly enough, stressful. Much is left to chance, and the outcome is far from known. There are details of it that I’d never expect, and some that I can’t explain, either. Still, it’s got a unique and appealing charm to it, and I think it fits the form of this one.

Thanks! Sheath is up next. :)
Nice, did you make it a sheath?

Sorry I missed ya, bud. We should catch up soon!
well chosen materials, great synergy ! we missed ya at ashokan.

Thanks, bud. I’ve only handled a couple of Rob’s knives, but they were marvels of clean, seemingly simple designs that displayed tremendous control and forethought. The symmetry he maintained throughout complex geometric changes was outrageous.
