desert mahogany

A friend gave me a few slabs of what he called desert mahogany. It is light in color with swatches of dark brown. Does anyone know anything about this wood, and would it work for knife scales?

Test the wood for hardness. If you can cut into it with a fingernail it is too soft for scales.

It is a mountain shrub. I have never used it, or seen it used. I think it would have to be stabilized. Here is some info:

thanks Stacy. I'll send some in for stabilization and give it a go. Kind of different and pretty wood, real mix of browns and tans.
