Design a RAT Knife

Cool thread! I'll play... The new RTAK (I whipped it up on SketchUp):

RATdesignproject-ChopperbyNBKiss.jpg

10" blade... I would like to see .25" S7 shock steel on this baby.

I know I said that crappy folder was my last one, but this one kind of came to me last night.

The RC9:

9" cutting edge. Bow drill divot. Thumb cutout and choil for more control on finer tasks.

The title says design a RAT knife but... I feel that a dedicated survival/camp hatchet would sell like hotcakes and be an awesome combo when paired with the RC-3 or 4 in the field.

So... I present to you the "RAT-chet" or RAT "cleaver" (couldn't think of a witty RC designation... ;))

Handle is an RC-4/RC-5 hybrid - I wanted the size and slope/lines of the RC-5 handle (horribly presented in my drawings) but I wanted to retain the finger choil of the RC-4. I also added another choil so that one could choke up in case one wanted to use this as a skinner or hand-chopper of sorts...

There is the same type of ribbing for the thumb as in all rat knives.

Thickness is .25" as in the RC-5.

the diagonal angle by the top/rear of the head would serve as another flat surface to get a different angle for batoning.

On the length, I feel if wanted, you could easily add another inch to the body in the area between the two choils. I like the stubby cleaver look of it as is but, function over fashion ;)

Also, the curve on the blade could be tweaked for maximum and the most productive angle for choppage - I have no idea of the suitable angle/curve.

You could skeletonize the head a bit to cut down on weight but I like that its just a slab of steel and "cleaver-ish."

This is just a quick sketch but the overall proportions and silhouette I feel are pretty much in line with what I would like to see.

My Dear Friends,

There are some incredible designs in this thread - RAT Cutlery certainly attracts some imaginative and creative folks.

I am surprised no one has hit on this one yet:

RATSurvivalBar-1.jpg

Blade length about 7", 5" or so of the top (after the jimping) saw blade, the remainder full thickness for batoning.

Please excuse the horrific drawing - I might work on PCs and do web design
for a living, but I suck as an artist. :p

I LOVE the folks that advertise a "seat-belt cutter" notch on the spine of this kind of design.

Well, my photoshop skills are rather lacking, so I've pasted together a knife design I generally like with a RAT handle.

My idea: The Rat Khuk!

However, the standard Khukri design generally isn't exactly like I want - you'll notice in the picture that this one is a lot wider near the tip than a standard khukri. This really shifts the weight towards the tip, making an absolutely mean chopper. Putting the weight into the width of the blade, rather than the thickness, also means you get a deeper bite, because you can build the knife from thinner steel.

My only modification would be to make the tip perhaps drop down even a bit more, and put a lanyard hole around the ricasso, or on the extended bit of guard. A little bit of flare at the back of the handle to keep a better grip would help, too.

I have named my submission La Reina (The Queen). Basically, it is very similar to the Izula, only scaled up about 141%- to make it more of a conventionally sized bushcraft type knife. I also designed it to be compatible with factory scales, though the user could choose to use it bare or wrapped too.

:D a nice and simple folder that should be easy to clean.

rcf.jpg

Length open: 7 1/2 inches
length closed: 4 3/8 inches
blade length: 3 1/8

Blade: Coated 1095 or CPM-D2

Foliage green or OD G10 scales: nice feel and strong

Stainless steel frame lock: frame lock should be one of the easier locks to clean

flipper: I know some people don't like the flipper, but you don't have to worry about a thumb stud or disk falling off or getting loose and you don't have to worry about cleaning gunk out off a hole in a hole opener.

Open back design: With 4 back spacer pins and not a solid back spacer it should be plenty strong enough and still easy to clean.

The clip: a four way low riding clip would be nice.

This is my idea for a line of weehawk style knives that would range from 4 to 7 inches. There is a slight recurve for a nice slicing edge and the weehawk style allows for great penetration. I also used a RC-4 handle style simply because there is nothing that feels as good in my hand.

I love that folder Cap, and that RTAK, Jaguar.
A little different.

Dimensions? I dunno, four inch blade?

A karambit handle (offering safety) with a ghurka blade. The ghurka blade is forward weighted. The arc in this design puts the blade in front of the swing, ensuring that the blade will be accelerating at the point of contact. The combination of the the two make it an incredible cutting tool.
