I'm looking for some input, advice and critiques on a couple design possibilities for one of my next knives. The knife will be for a young lady to carry while deer hunting. She needs a smaller knife and both designs have a 3" blade and 6.5" overall. I plan to use 1/8" AEB-L and outsource the heat treat.

Thanks

I like the top one. If it will be used for skinning deer, maybe a little less pointy at the tip to avoid puncturing the hide. Otherwise looks gtg to me

I'm with S.Alexander. I like the top one but a little more of a drop point. Somewhere between the two. Looks good though.

Thanks guys. Tohus' rendering looks pretty similar to the one I drew up last night after posting...
Would be the middle version in this shot.

PS. What program do you use for that Tohus?

Design wise ,any of those last ones will make a usable knife .
As far as looks one design may win out over another.
sometimes , during shaping,a particular design will evolve in ways unexpected at first.
those are the times when creativity has it's head .

I think Tohus has it right. I also think the handle should be at least 4" and 4 1/2" would be better, unless you tried the handle you have drawn.

Thanks fellas.

The more I look at them Eric, the more I like them all in their own way. I have enough steel, no reason to not make them all! :D

Tim, I understand your concerns, but as previously mentioned this project is intended for a young lady.

I like the design of the top and middle knife both from the last photo posted, however, I think they both need a bit more belly added for a dedicated hunting knife. I also think the handle to blade length ratio is off just a little. I have a suspicion they won't scale correctly to your intended OAL of 6 1/2", especially since they're hidden tang. It will make for a very short handle. I would add at least another 1/2" to the length of the handle.

I agree with Adam but I would add more than a half inch. For a 3 inch blade I make the handle about 4 1/2 inches. For a lady's knife you may get away with 4 inches but no less for sure. Your guard is too thick at the bottom and will look clunky if you don't thin it down a good bit. I think all the blade shapes look pretty good.

As was said in the above post (about handle lenght and guard), plus...consider to make the handle less dropped/curved; a skinner/hunter should be more versatile and confortable to use in different grips, and a just a bit straighter handle allows for better edge-up, edge-down work.
Not a big deal anyway, and the blades are very nice, both of them.
