I took a quick look at GunsAmerica and you can get the LMT Defender 2000 for $1025. On par with the Colt 6920, I'd save up just a little more and get that.

Ok. I'm an AR novice. The lower has the SN and must, generally, go through a FFL, correct? Where do you purchase the rest (not what, but where)? Are their kits? How do you know you are buying quality and that it will all work together? Is mil-spec important? Where do I find armorer information? Ironically, there is so much information I don't know where to start.

*Correct, lowers are controlled
*Use Google BravoCompanyUSA , Tapco, MidwayUSA etc etc. good places to start.
*Sign up at Ar15.com there is a metric ton of info there with dedicated forums to the AR platforms and plenty knowledgable people.

I got a Rock River lower for $120 bucks off gunbroker.com, a 20" HB kit from Delton and had less than $700 in it. I bought a EOTech for $400. Assembly is a snap & I can send a video to watch while you do it but I think it's a free download at Brownells.

One piece of advice that I used was to use electrical tape to cover the reciever in the areas around your work while installing the pins. I also taped the jaws on my Vise-Grips and used them instead of a hammer and punch. Build only takes about 20 minutes or so.

I love the AK platform as a workhorse defensive rifle. Boringly reliable, accurate enough for my needs. The genuine russian stuff, like Saiga, are more accurate than I am. Superb tools.

If you want an AR, there's also no reason you can't have one like you want it for under a grand. I built an 18" rifle-length gas one with Double Star parts. I've compared their lowers to Colt, etc. and cannot find differences. I've put lots of rounds through it too without a hitch.

If you follow any of our links, be sure to check with the actual manufacturer of the rifle you think you might want. I can tell you personally, the spreadsheet in the last post is inaccurate as far as CMMG rifles are concerned.
