Im new here so just bear with me. Im trying to find some free ware or cheap software for designing logos.I have some rough ideas, but no way to put on paper. any help would be appreciated.

Wes the way I have done it was draw out my Logo design with simplicity being the key, I t must etch or stamp cleanly. I found a friend that thta happens to be a graphic artist. He has converted my stuff into an Adobe vector art file which is what most companys preferr to receive.

Another apporch is contact the art department at a local high school or college talk with the teacher and they will more than likely give you a hand.

The cheap software is just that cheap and difficult to use the good stuff is exspensive and takes time to learn.

Hope this helps

Hey Wes,
If you want professional looking logos you need professional tools. I like Adobe Illustrator for designing logos. It's not cheap, but if you are designing a graphic which is to represent your company to the world, you don't want to skimp. You can probably find a local graphic artist to help you with your ideas. Again, It may not be cheap, but remember It's CUSTOM work and just like everything else custom, you gotta invest a little more. Just some thoughts to keep in mind.

good luck!

If you have a college nearby with a Graphic Design course, you might be able to get a student to do it as a project.

Go to a pro.
How would the knifemakers (the pros) feel if someone told a perspective knife buyer to go to a college shop class and have them whip something up for you?
It's your mark.
It represents you and your work.

I'm sure there are alot of Graphic Artists here that would, happily, take a knife or knives in payment.

If you really want to DIY, draw it out yourself (old school, pen, paper, ruler & triangle) at least 10x larger than it will be used then either scan it or reduce it on a photocopier.

If you are just looking for a drawing program with a little more umph than paint, have you considered GIMP for Windows?
http://www.gimp.org/windows/

it is free by the way and even does layers so you can superimpose things.

GIMP is a LINUX program, but they have it for windows also.

If you, or anyone, have a hand drawing of something e-mail it to me and I can probaly sweet talk my better half into whipping something up. She does graphics full time at a university and she is really good at taking an outline or rough sketch and creating the artwork. We can talk price or barter offline.

I maybe able to help you out on this matter, but you will need to call me on the phone. You can call me my number is on the log. Have a great day...........................

Go to a pro.

Yup. Don't by any means turn your nose up at help from students or friends, or DIY; but don't overlook the people who do this for a living, either.

Any designer (or printer, or stamp-maker, etc.) worth their salt will give you a free quote, and plenty of free advice if you ask for it. You may very well find that their per-hour design rate and the digital/hard copies they can provide you with, are worth far more than a middle-of-the-road graphics program.

I presume this is far a company or business logo as opposed to a stamp?

I've not made many and doubt I'll get into knife making enough to need a stamp, But I know what mine would be if i ever do need one :) Just my name in a shallow arch over a interrupted circle comprising 5 arcs of thirty degrees with a diameter of .312 interspaced with five arcs with a diameter of .303, and the outline line drawing of a kiwi in the middle.

The rifling profile of a Lee Enfiled 5 groove .303 rifle, and a kiwi. Seeing as my Login everywhere on the net is pretty much exclusively Kiwi303, and I'm a NZer (kiwi) who owns and shoots .303 Lee Enfields, it just seems appropriate.

There won't be many that will know the origins and joke behind that stamp, but it just tweaks my sense of humour, and is personal to my sense of myself. :D

The moral of this little story is try and choose a logo design that means something to you rather than being a market research led bland bit of nothing designed to have as few minorities rioting in your streets as possible.

I'm a PRO, not really looking for side jobs... but I'm kinda a knife nut and I'd be happy to work something out. Just send me a private message and I will let you know how to reach me. JOHN

I would like to thank every one for there reply, I feel that Ive been steered in the right direction. thanks again.

I do all my personalizing on Microsoft Words Word Art (comes standard on a lot of new comp). You can do anything with lettering that you can imagine....and then some. Then I print it on Transparencies and make photo resists out of them to do my etchings

Here is a suggestion you can obviously take or leave.

Logo's don't mean much to people unless they know who the logo represents. 100 years from now a logo won't mean a thing to whoever sees it. If your name is the "logo" then people will know who made it. It's even better if you have city/state included, then they can figure out who made the incredibly awesome knife so that you can be located to sell more knives, that is if 100 years hasn't gone by.

When you become famous, you can scale the logo back to a dancing pig or a shooting star or whatever. There are many many well known knifemakers for who a "logo" on the knives they make is their name.
