Desire for original box on resale

A lot of good points, but i have to disagree with the idea just because one kept the box ,that somehow shows knife is well cared for, all my knives no matter their cost are kept safe, secure and well taken care of in my knife display/storage Gerstner toolbox. I guess my thought was I do not see most of my sub $200 knives as collectables but more as commodities to use with care, unless for some reason they happen to be some rare piece. 🤤

The thing that takes up the most space is all the Glock Tupperware! I can live with a few knife boxes in a tub in the garage 😁

I toss the boxes in the garbage. :D

I think having the box will help a used pre-owned knife sell faster, but I'm not sure it will necessarily increase the value.

Then you don't understand the resale market for knives.

I've got all of my Glock "Tupperware" boxes and the box/case every other handgun came in and I also still have all of the original boxes that my rifle & shotguns came in too, even though I've shot every handgun, rifle & shotgun.

I live alone and have a lot of space and don't have a wife to complain about such things. LOL! ;)

No one is saying that the existence of the box is evidence that it was "well cared for."

What "collectors are looking are are knives that have NOT been used and are in new or like new condition w/the box (and any inserts or swag that came with it) to make it as close to the original as purchased as possible. People who are not "collectors" do not care about such things.

BTW, ideally, the box also need to be in new or like new condition too to satisify the more scrupulous collectors.

I'm not so fastidious. ;)

I guess you did not read the post I was responding too "I think there's an unsaid thought that a person who kept a box and knew where to find it when selling the knife has a better chance of also being meticulous and taking care of the knife."
Also reread my original post as well my question was with less expensive knives that are being sold as used, not like new in the box, why do people care about the box so much. With the Shiro and Koneig I sold I understand the collecting market wants the box, COA and all the goodies. If I bought a leek in great condition for half of what it cost new, I would not need/nor want a box, for me it is not a collectable. Like all things to each his own.

That is why I said there would be exceptions. There's lots of folks on here who hoard the packaging while running a knife hard and putting it away wet.

I keep the boxes for knives I don't intend to use.

I intend to use all the knives I buy.

The only exception to the rule is a Buck 124 I purchased brand new from the Buck website, it's such a nice box I couldn't just throw it away (the knife was scratched up and used within about 15 minutes of getting it).

I read your post and I do not need to re-read it.

You may not think so but my responses address the points you raise in your initial post and in the one above.

Not point dwelling on it any further. Ciao! 😎

I'm thinking I should sell all my knives, and keep just the boxes.

People could come over, and I could show them shelves full of my collection....

I could impress them for a fraction of the cost I've currently invested.

🤔

Sorta pointless isn't it?

It's mostly down to the price of a knife whether I'll keep the box and partially the brand. All the Morakniv, other budget fixed blades, and utility budget folders have the boxes thrown away.

I've kept all my Joker, Boker, and Grohmann boxes, but thrown away all the Condor boxes. I kept all my Spyderco boxes (they don't take up a lot of room), except the Walker and the Manix 2. The Cold Steel boxes also aren't overly bulky and give you somewhere to put those left handed pocket clips so you don't lose them. I even kept the excessively large box that the Benchmade Altitude rattles around in that was big enough for a huge fixed blade. I only have one box from a multi-tool (Victorinox Spirit) and none of the boxes from my machetes (not that many of them came in boxes).

I haven't sold any of my knives, but have given away plenty of them, and it's always nicer to give them away with the box they came in. The other thing I find is that for storage in drawers, it's nicer to stack them without having the knives scratching each other up.

I tossed all my Tupperware in a single bunch 3 years ago. I just walked them out to the trash can and tossed them in. Later that week I put the trash out on the curb and when I woke up the next morning all 11 of the cases were open in my yard! Don’t know if it was trash pickers or the trash guys thinking they may have gotten very lucky.

Lol, I don't want the garbage guys to have any idea of the arsenal within my walls! Especially here in California!

I usually toss all of my boxes. Lately, the only ones I have kept are the CRK and that's primarily because it's an easy way to store the little tool kit they include. I don't dump them at home, though. I just put them in a dumpster near my shipping company so I don't even take them home. I just need to make sure they are empty before I dump them as I won't get a chance to re-check them later.
