detent holes for 2013

For the blade travel. The ball is what touches the blade as it opens. If it weren't there, then the lock bar would drag on the blade at it opened. Can you imagine what that would feel like, and do to the knife?

Ahhh...I get it! Thanks for clearing that up.

Stick, I think your analysis would be summed up easier with one word: Friction.

I don't think so. Not really an analysis, just why knives have that ball regardless of detent receiver. It's not just about friction, but also wear from the different materials that would come from that kind of interaction.

I also don't see the Knockout's lack of detent receiver as an oversight. It was a design choice, not as if they just forgot about it.

I was being humorous, but I'll indulge your rebuttal. The wear you were speaking of would take place as a result of increased friction. By decreasing the contact area you allow for smoother opening and less friction thus creating less wear.

I agree that it was a design choice. Jim is a smart guy who knows far more than I do about knife design (or ever will). By oversight, I not saying they "forgot". I'm simply stating that they didn't feel like it was a necessary feature when I (and others) feel like it was. It's a matter of opinion, not fact. Regardless, it's a great knife that sees a lot of pocket time :)

How often do torsion bars break? After a Year of daily use in Afghanistan by my paratrooper s-i-l, my 0300 had no problems what so ever. I don't worry about that.

I've only had one break in all of my Kershaws. The answer is eventually. It really depends on use and if you're just sitting there opening and closing it repeatedly all the time. They are a very durable assist system IMO. However, if it does break and there is no detent hole... It will become an issue until you are able to replace the torsion bar.

I had a torsion bar snap in my blur (brand new) in only 3 weeks of daily use (no abuse). On the other hand I had a leek that the torsion bar was still rocking strong after 4 years, being used the exact same amount (probably more since it was my first AO and I played with it a bit at first).

That said, the torsion bar is simple and user serviceable unlike many on the market currently. However, kershaw's torsion bar is just a small slender chunk of metal, each with it's own imperfections and micro-fractures prone to wear differently. There's no way to tell when a torsion bar may break. If a torsion bar does break, even if you have a model, like the blur such as I did, with a detent, if the knife goes on unserviced it is possible for the torsion bar pieces to come loose and bind up the internals. I know because I was edc'ing my blur waaayyy out of town (on the lake), without any access to tools and found myself in this exact situation.

I love the Blur, but hate the thought of hearing that "!POP!" again. I'm also among the minority that didn't feel that the blur's detent was sufficient enough without the speedsafe equipped. So my current edc is my 0550.

I would like all speedsafe knives to have a detent, because at least then the blade would stay put in the event the torsion bar did break.
