Detent on my Custom Knife Factory S.S.E.

Got this knife today in the mail, love the look and feel and seems like a slicing monster. The detent, however, almost cannot be overcome. Never mind that your fingers can't rest anywhere near the lockbar when flipping it open (it's literally impossible with fingers on the huge lockbar), but even when the lockbar is clear, the pressure necessary to deploy the blade is absurd. When I use my second hand to open the blade, it almost feels as if I need to pry it open. Anyone else out there have this knife and do you have a similar experience? Does mine sound like its defective? Thanks in advance.

Sounds sth is wrong with the knife. Is the detent ball sitting VERY deep in the detent hole? Try to apply some CRK grease into the detent hole to see if it helps.

I'm not able to see the detent ball without taking it apart, and I don't want to do any disassembly if it would impair my ability to have the knife exchanged or void the warranty. Think I should send it back to BHQ?

Mine is the same way...the easy solution is to turn your finger, approaching the flipper tab from the side, rather than the top. You'll be amazed at how much easier it is.
The other way that works is to curl your finger so it is perpendicular to the handle, with the pad against the flipper tab. (as noted, keep your fingers off the lockbar) then just flick the tab back.

Thanks hhmoore, I've turned my finger every which way I know how and it's rubbed raw from trying. The only way I've been able to open it using the flipper is by placing all of my fingers, except for the index finger, on the pocket clip. Does yours "stick" when you open it with 2 hands? Mine literally "pops" when I first open the blade.

I just tried your suggestions per photos (thanks for doing that!) but mine is far more sticky. There's no way I can open it as you illustrate.

If you are careful, and rest your fingers lightly on the clip, you'll probably find that it flips more easily...or, you can grip the knife with the pressure being on the blade side edge of the clip, and the knife will flip easily; but my first two recommendations require a lot less consideration of hand placement. It will break in, and get easier; but I still find it easiest to use the methods described above.

Yes, mine sticks - and requires pull to open two handed.
Give your hand a break for a day or two, then come back to it with the side of your index finger (just be careful not to get the meat of your thumb in the way of the blade, lol)

Maybe back off a hair on the pivot tension?
If you bought it new, and you're having this much trouble, call the dealer. Maybe an exchange is in order.

OK thanks, I'll do that. It just seems a bit absurd to have to do anything 'unconventional' to open a knife in this price range. It should be super easy. Oh well, I guess that's the risk of making purchases online.

Good lord! Never knew a flipper requires some different techniques to open properly. I have nearly 20 flippers (Hinderer, ZT, Reate, Kizer) and they can all flip regardless of my techniques, light switch, push button, horn honking, you name it.

OP - for peace of mind, just send it back to bladehq. Next time when purchasing an expensive knife, ask the dealer to check it for you.

I know sharp-edge, that's what I thought! I have no problems with my other flippers, they all seem super smooth and easy compared to this. I'll contact BHQ Monday morning and see what they have to say about it.

Yeah, I found the search for what worked off-putting. I don't like flippers with overly firm detents (I prefer them soft, so I can nudge the blade free without deploying it, if I want to - not because I have a reason to do that; but because that ability is an easy indicator). I don't really like dedicated flippers - I like choices, whether that means thumbstuds, hole, nail knick, whatever; so I have the option of a slower, controlled opening. The SSE has a lot going for it; but the fact that one has to have the grip just right, or figure out what might work, is a detraction. When all is said and done, though, I like the knife...using the side of my finger just sort of happened while I was playing with it; but it doesn't have a forced or unnatural feeling, and it isn't overly dependent on where my fingers are on the other side. I don't think about how to open that knife, even when I haven't carried it for a month - it just happens (which is more than I can say for the PM2's compression lock - I have to think about that every time).

It sucks that you're having issues with yours, but at least resolution is an email or phone call away.

Yes it does suck, but I'm sure BHQ will make it right for me. I've bought about 20 knives from them over the past 2 weeks. That's right ... I've got it bad.

I like a strong detent, and don't mind a break in period. Sort of rewarding to feel it smooth out.

If you have tried several different flipping techniques and are not putting pressure on the lockbar then I would return it.

What’s the point of a flipper you can’t flip?

If it will eventually definitely "break in" then I'll stick it out. It's just a hassle to explain the problem, send it back, etc. But I tend to agree with you Lapedog, a knife of this kind should function more easily IMO.

I have the same issue , I'm just more mindful of were fingers are . Need to be off lock bar
Even the pocket clip.
I feel for the gap on lock side and keep finger tips below
I'm right handed. It's easier to open this left handed , less pressure from palm

It could be defective, but without trying it I couldn't confirm.

As for weird finger placement and lock bars, muscle memory starts to take over. I like learning these knives and watching others struggle. Mean I know.

My 0452G10 had a stiff detent, required a fairly long break in and chewed up my finger a bit. Big hands, so finger placement took some getting used to also. Love it now, fires hard.

Personal preferences are different for many. Your money be happy.
